Leonard E. “Sonny” Straub

Leonard E. “Sonny” Straub, age 91, of Bradford Villa, Quincy, died on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 in Sunset Home. He was born on August 8, 1923 in Quincy, a son of Emery Clay & Margarett (Moore) Straub. He married Billie L. Smith on September 22, 1949 in Grace United Methodist Church, Quincy. She preceded him in death on May 5, 1995.

Sonny served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 – 1946. While enlisted, he was a switch hitter for the Navy in the 1943 Central Pacific Area Championship Series – better known as the Service World Series that was held in Hawaii between the Navy and Army.

He was a member of the Church of St. Peter.

Sonny owned and operated Palm Gardens, and was Administrative Assistant at the Illinois Veteran’s Home, retiring in 1988. He also worked for several years as a realtor. Leonard looked forward to his weekly luncheons with the Romeo Club (Really Old Men Eating Out) and his weekly bridge games.

Survivors include his three daughters: Sharon (Dave) Reinberg and Sunny Straub, all of Quincy and Jan Straub of Placerville, CA; four grandchildren, Rebecca (James) Jones, Michelle Page, David Reinberg & Cheryl (Steve) Newborough; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law Paul (Lois) Otto of Quincy.

In addition to his wife, Billie, and his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Carroll Creech; a sister-in-law, JoAnn Otto; a brother-in-law, Art Smith; and a grandson, Darin Reinberg.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home, by Monsignor Leo Enlow. Interment will be in Quincy Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Wednesday beginning at 12:00 noon until the time of services at 1:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to Unity Point Hospice or to the Church of St. Peter.

    Was working in activity when under Sunny & later meant him three yrs ago at Eurche games at St. Peter , enjoyed his sense of humor, he also enjoy chatting about his life, nice guy, rip Sunny. Condolence to family.
