Leo L. Stegeman, age 94, of the Illinois Veterans Home, died on Monday, July 8, 2019 in the home. He was born on November 5, 1924 in Quincy, IL the son of Carl and Helen (Rupp) Stegeman, Sr. He married Marilyn Ostermiller on April 29, 1950 in Quincy. She preceded him in death on September 16, 2016. Mr. Stegeman was in insurance sales for more than 50 years in the Quincy area. He took pride in personally delivering checks to his customers that made a claim. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII. Leo was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.

Leo graduated from Notre Dame High Academy in 1942 and immediately entered the Navy. After returning from service in the South Pacific during World War II, he graduated from Quincy College. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Leo and his wife Marilyn were avid card players, especially proficient at euchre. While in high school, he was a center on the basketball team. Leo and Marilyn attended Quincy Notre Dame football, basketball, soccer and baseball events until Marilyn’s passing in 2016. He followed his grandchildren’s sporting events with great pride and enthusiasm. Leo was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed watching professional football and college basketball, especially the NCAA Tournament. More than anything, he loved to spend time with his family, especially picnics with his wife, sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Leo was old school. He never wore shorts and never failed to harass any of his sons, grandsons, or the guys that the grandkids brought around about it. He would always tell them, “I can’t wear shorts. My legs look too good.” Leo will be sorely missed by the entire family.

Leo is survived by five sons, Ronald Stegeman and his wife Clarissa “Ikie” ( Frese) of Apple Valley, MN; Donald Stegeman and his wife Cynthia (Rowe); Paul Stegeman and his wife Jill (Niemann); Marty Stegeman and his wife Laurie (Deters); Ken Stegeman and his wife Tammy (Zehnle) all of Quincy.
17 Grandchildren: Brian Stegeman and his wife Jennifer, Joseph Stegeman; Kyle Stegeman and his wife Sarah, Colin Stegeman, Melanie Knight and her husband Ryan; Stacey Lambert and her husband John, Devon Stegeman and his wife Erin, Cory Stegeman and his wife Kristy; Kaitlyn Phillips and her husband Joshua, Jacob and Nicholas Stegeman; Kristen, Michelle, Matthew, Andrew, Abigail and Olivia Stegeman.
9 Great-grandchildren: Kinga Stegeman; Derrick and Shawn Stegeman; Harper and Jackson Lambert; Kacie and Dominic Stegeman; Evelyn and Nathan Phillips, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Leo was also preceded in death by his parents and six siblings: Paul, Rich (wife Carlene), Art (wife Clara), Herb (wife Ginny), Carl ‘Bud’ Stegeman, Jr. and Dorothy (husband Richard) Kohl.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2019 at 9:30 at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:00 at St. Francis Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary Cemetery with military rites conducted at the cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Quincy Notre Dame or to St. Francis Catholic Church.
