Laura K. Pfaffe
Laura K. Pfaffe, age 99, of 1110 S. 19th Street, Quincy died on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at 4:21 a.m. in Blessing Hospital. She was born on January 20, 1910 in Gilmer Township. She was a daughter of Oscar and Lena (Dietrich) Schmelzle. She married Alfred H. Pfaffe on June 30, 1951 in St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on April 19, 2004.
Laura was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She worked at Gates Radio and later at Harris Corporation as an assembly worker where she retired.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Council of Catholic Woman, Sacred Heart of Catholic Women, Lady of Charities of Catholic Women, St. Vincent De Paul, Blessed Sacrament 60 and Over Club, Honorary member of Wenois Field Archers, and Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews, Great-nieces and nephews, Great-Great nieces and nephews, and Great-Great-Great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, Raymond, Clarence & Alvin Schmelzle, two nephews, Wayne & Wilmer Schmelzle, a niece, Norma Jean Schmelzle Bates, and a great nephew, Douglas Schmelzle.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 9, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and 10:00 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by Monsignor Michael Kuse. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday evening from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home, with a prayer service at 6:45 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Laura was such a good friend of my mother-Gert Sohn and it brought back many memories. We extend our sympathy to Laura’s family.
I’m sorry it’s taken so long for me to run across this obituary on the Internet. My Dad (Lawrence A. “Unk” Wellman) was Laura’s first cousin and, if memory serves me, my Mother Leola stayed with Uncle Oscar and Aunt Lena and Laura while Dad was in the service and worked for a map maker in Quincy. I have such great memories from early childhood visiting in their home and, later on, visiting with Laura and Al. She and my Aunt Cate (Catherine Wellman) were not only first cousins, but very good friends. To all of Laura’s nieces and nephews…I’m so sorry for your loss. She was a grand lady,
