Larry “Mickey” Nutt

Larry M. “Mickey” Nutt, 76, of Quincy, died at 2:40 p.m. Friday, August 26, 2022, in Sunset Home. Larry was born on April 7, 1946, in Quincy, a son of James & Ina (Hartsock) Nutt. He graduated from Quincy High School and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he was a Seaman. Upon returning from the Navy, he worked several jobs in Quincy and Iowa City, IA, including jobs bartending and as a professional draftsman.

While in the Navy, Larry earned a Meritorious Unit Commendation to Beach Jumper Unit One, involving combat in support of military operations in the Republic of Vietnam. He contributed significantly to the success of 27 major amphibious assaults in Vietnam. He also contributed to the successful accomplishment of the mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Special Landing Teams, operating while under enemy fire to conduct leaflet drop missions ashore in Vietnam, helping save numerous U.S. lives.

Larry was a diehard baseball fan, including his love for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He carried on his love of the game to his grandchildren. He was also an avid and accomplished pool player, dart player, and bowler and passed those passions on to his family. He loved Texas Hold’em, Dr. Pepper and most of all loved his family and numerous friends. He coached youth baseball and was an umpire for many years. He was a long-time member of the VFW.

Larry married Karen Fuller in the summer of 1969. During their 13+ years together they had four children – Larry Michael Nutt, Jr., who preceded him in death, and Kevis (Tammie) Nutt, Chelsie (Deron) Nutt Johnson and Derek (Colleen) Nutt, all of Quincy. They survive. Also surviving are: TWO BROTHERS: Gary (Lilly) Nutt of Springfield, IL, and Randy (Linda) Nutt of Quincy; ONE SISTER: his little sister Cindy (Milton) Willingham of Quincy; GRANDCHILDREN: Dusty, Tristan, Zane, Okley, Bryton, Nate, Adriana, Jazmine, Gavin, Ryan, Henry and Hugh; GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Brinley, Dean, Avalynne, Adley, Annalise, Mariana and Moses; STEP GRANDCHILDREN: Whitney and Brandon; STEP GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Josephine and James. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.

Besides his son Larry Jr., he was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson Gage, brothers: Robert Nutt, Donald Nutt, Ronnie Nutt, Kerry Nutt, and Dennis Nutt; sisters: Roberta Guthrie, Jayma Arnold, Karen Hunolt, Marcia Hale, and Vickie Cole. The family wishes to send out a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff at Sunset Home 3rd Floor, who handled Larry’s last days with exceptional care and compassion.

A Memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 from 12:00 noon until 1:30 at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Military rites and service will be held at 1:30 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
