Kenneth James Heinze, 81, of Quincy, Illinois, died at 6:45 a.m. on Saturday, December 3, 2016 in Quincy. He was born on July 12, 1935 in Quincy, a son of Alfred J. and Edith M. (Kohl) Heinze. He married Martha A. Maas on Nov. 30, 1957. She died on April 10, 2010. He married Bessie C. (Spratt) Gibson on Nov. 7, 2011. She survives him.

Ken was a graduate of Notre Dame High School in 1953. He attained a Bachelor’s degree in Management from Quincy College in 1957. While in college he was a past president of the Alpha Delta Gamma National Catholic Fraternity. Ken was a member of the Army National Guard for six years.

He and Martha lived in Springfield, Chicago, and Joliet, Illinois their first eight years of marriage. During this time he worked as a records analyst for the Illinois Secretary of State’s office, a computer programmer for the Department of Agriculture and as a Programmer/Systems Analyst in the Accounting Department for Argonne National Laboratory. In 1966 they moved to Aurora, Illinois, where Ken worked for Allsteel, Inc. for 23 years in various managerial positions including Data Processing, Computer Operations, Office Services, and Facility Planning. He also sold real estate for Coldwell Banker for about seven years. In 1996, he retired and they returned to Quincy.

Ken was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Mart Heinen Club, and member and past officer of the Elks Club. He enjoyed birding, bowling, golfing, fishing, gardening, collecting post cards and stamps, and spending time with his grandchildren. Ken was also very active in Scouting with Cub, Boy and Senior Scouts. He served as Assistant Scoutmaster and advancement chairman for several years, and he worked with scouts in attaining religious awards. Ken was awarded the Saint George Emblem. He also was a merit badge counselor for several merit badges. He was a Eucharistic Minister and lector at St. Peter Church and a Eucharistic Minister at Blessing Hospital. Ken enjoyed tutoring for the literacy program at John Wood Community College and mentoring with students at Dewey, Monroe and St. Peter schools. He also volunteered at the Catholic Charities food pantry and was a Hospice volunteer.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie; his sons: Stephen L. and his wife Deborah of Wheaton, IL; Craig M. of Schaumburg, IL; Timothy S. and his wife Jolene of Boise, ID; Kevin J. and his fiancée Yvette Cabeza de Vaca of Parker, CO; and Mark C. and his wife Kimberly of Quincy; his sister Rita A. Bland and her husband Duane of Enon, OH; his brother James A. and his wife Judith of Lafayette, CO; and seven grandchildren – Susan (Christopher), Kristin (Daniel), John, Ben, Kyle, Drew, and Olivia, and one step-grandchild, Ethan. Also surviving are his step-sons Bradley of Quincy, IL and Mark Gibson of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; step-grandchildren Casey Jackson and Tylere (John) Lyons; and three step-greatgrandchildren, Madilynn, Keaton, and Vincent.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred J. and Edith M. (Kohl) Heinze; two brothers, Donald A. and Russell H. Heinze; and his first wife, Martha A. (Maas) Heinze.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of St. Peter. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Church of St. Peter, Quincy University, Notre Dame High School, or UnityPoint Hospice. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
