Josephine Affre
Josephine Grace Affre, 95, of the Good Samaritan Home, formerly of Curtis Creek Independent Living, died on Thursday, November 18, 2021 in the Good Samaritan Home. Born on July 6, 1926 in Quincy, was the daughter of John & Venera (Counderi) Affre. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy, received her Bachelor’s Degree from (then) Quincy College and a Master’s Degree from Western Illinois University.
Ms. Affre was an Elementary School Teacher, first in the Catholic School System in Joliet, IL and later in the Public School System in California. She returned to Quincy and taught in the Quincy Public Schools for 25 years.
She was an avid bridge player, and with her sister Magdalen, travelled all over the world. She loved her house on Curtis Creek with its meticulous white carpets. Josephine loved to shop and was known for her fabulous wardrobe. She was a Precinct Committeewoman of the Democratic Party. Most importantly, she was loved by two generations of Quincy schoolkids, whom she adored.
Ms. Affre was a member of St. Peter Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters: Magdalen Chapman and Angela Affre. Survivors include a niece, Martha Goebel (nee Chapman) of Washington, DC, a grandniece Claudia Goebel Payne of Cheverly MD, a grandnephew Legba Carrefour of Washington DC and also a cousin Joseph Newkirk of Quincy.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 11:00 AM in St. Peter Catholic Church. Inurnment in St. Peter Cemetery. Visitation will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church on Tuesday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the services at 11:00.

Jo was a LOVELY lady with whom I taught at Franklin School in the ’70’s. She was a most patient and loving teacher, and I always enjoyed sharing a laugh or a story of her travels. May she reap the beautiful benefits of her earthly life!
Miss Affre was my 5th grade teacher at St. Peter’s. She had taught 4th grade in California the year before I had her in class. After getting to know her current 5th graders she paired us with a student from her previous California class. My pen pal Chris and I began writing letters to one another in 1961. We had the opportunity to meet for the first time when we were in college and continue to correspond to this day. I am so grateful to Miss Affre for introducing me to a lifelong long distance friend. May God rest your soul Miss Affre . You will be forever remembered.

Josephine Affre……or just Jo by those of us who enjoyed her company and her politics!!!! She was a wonderful, wonderful human being! She was a great school teacher and those that had her know her love of children and making sure they always got her best!!!!! God bless her soul and my sympathy to everyone she loved!!!! Mike McClain

Miss Affre my fifth grade teacher at St Peters. Our family had just moved into the parish and Miss Affre made it easy for me to integrate into a new school. She was always kind and caring. It was easy to learn from this beautiful young woman. May God rest her soul.
Miss Affre was my 5th grade teacher at St. Peter’s. She is the person who brought my love of geography to light. Even back in the ’50’s she had a fashion sense about her even though all she wore was skirts and blouses. I saw her a few years ago at my book signing. She was just the same as I remembered her from grade school. God rest your soul, Miss Affre. You are and will be remembered.
Dear Family,
My family had know Jo and he sisters and parents over 100 yrs. My mother who will be 100 was just good friends will all them.
