Jon O. Rakers, age 84, of Quincy, died on Thursday, January 14, 2021 in Blessing Hospital. He was born on December 12, 1936 in Quincy, the son of Cyril and Georgia (Omer) Rakers.

Jon was a graduate of St. Francis, Quincy Notre Dame, Quincy College and St. Louis College of Pharmacy. He served his country in the Navy, attached 3 and 1/2 years with the Marine Corps, as a corpsman, from 1957-1962.

Jon was employed as a pharmacist and was a partner and owner of Earl and Buss Drug Store for many years. He was dedicated to his profession and was known for filling prescriptions in the middle of the night for the hospital or other medical professionals in the area. He also worked as a relief pharmacist in the Quincy area until his retirement in 2010.

He was involved in the local Adams County pharmacists association and served as a regional representative and on the Board of Directors for the Illinois Pharmacists Association.

Jon really spent his life in service to others, which is evident even after his retirement. He volunteered as a blood donor for the Red Cross, and assisted with local, national, and international disaster relief efforts including house fires, local flooding, 9/11, hurricane Katrina, and in Haiti. He was active in the United Way, Quincy Notre Dame and Quincy University Fund Drives. He served St. Francis Church assisting at funeral masses.

Jon enjoyed participating in activities, especially golf, tennis, and swimming, as a member of the YMCA, Quincy Racquet Club, Westview, and Spring Lake Country Club, where he served as President.

Jon is survived by daughters: Cathy Rakers of Portland, Oregon, and Kim Taylor of Port Orange, Florida; siblings: David R. Rakers of Quincy, and Mary Colvin of St. Louis. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Donald Rakers.

Private graveside services will be held at Sunset Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post #37 and the US Naval Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross.
