John William Slater

John William Slater age 77, of 2105 State Street Quincy, died on Friday, August 2, 2013 at 7:55 p.m. in Blessing Hospital. John was born March 15, 1936 in Quincy, a son of John and Lola (Wissman) Slater. He married Elaine C. Stuckman on July 17, 1957 in St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church, and she survives.

John was retired from his work as a jeweler at Emerald City Jewelers. He was a graduate of Gem City Business College with a degree in horology. He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserves.

John was of the Catholic faith. He worked countless hours as a volunteer for the City of Quincy and Quincy Police Department. For many years he was very involved with the Boy Scouts. John loved to cook and share the meals that he prepared. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. For many holidays seasons, John was Santa Claus for family gatherings and local events.

In addition to his wife, Elaine, survivors also include his two children, Joan Mast and her husband Chuck, and John “Jay” Slater and his wife Melissa, all of Quincy.
Three grandchildren, Kellie Mast, Emily Mast and Sydney Slater all of Quincy; a brother, Ed Slater and his wife Phyllis of Independence, MO and two sisters, Clara Bauer of St Charles, MO and Betty Fischer of Quincy along with many nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and five sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home by Rev. Don Blaeser, O.F.M. Interment will be in Quincy Memorial Park. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Mississippi Valley Council of the Boy Scouts, or to the Quincy Police Auxillary.

    My heart goes out to the Slater family, They opened their home to me many years ago while I was doing my student teaching at Quincy HS with Joan. Their hospitality and generosity made me feel like I was at my own home with my family. They were my second family. I will never forget the memorable times we all shared. God Bless!
