John Sherwood, age 88, of 1707 N. 12th Street, Quincy, formerly of New Canton, IL, died on Sunday, July 25, 2010 at 6:12 p.m. in Blessing Hospital. He was born on March 1, 1922 in Alton, Illinois a son of John & Pearl (Boyles) Sherwood. He married Mary Alice Buster in September, 1965 in Chicago. She preceded him in death on September 3, 2004.

John was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during World War II from 1942-1944. He held a variety of jobs in steelwork and truck driving.

John was of the Protestant faith.

He enjoyed Cardinal baseball, hunting, picking berries, and being outdoors. He loved his animals.

Survivors include:
FOUR SONS: James Edward Sherwood; Steve Sherwood & Johnny Sherwood of Chicago, & Jim Sherwood;
TWO DAUGHTERS: Mary Pearl Thomas and her husband Paul of Quincy, and Susan Hilton of Oregon.
SISTERS: Charrlette Jones and her husband Alfred of Carrollton, IL, Mae Brossard of Louisiana, Anna Dell Burrios of Panama, IL, & Mary Grizzle and her husband King of Whitehall, IL;
TWO BROTHERS: Orville Sherwood of Forsterburg, IL, & Donald Sherwood of Wood River, IL.
Several Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren, Nieces & Nephews also survive.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sons, Johnny Sherwood & John McClintock, four sisters, Alice Roberts, Vivian Clowers, Helen Ford, Emma Morrow and one brother, Thomas Sherwood.

Graveside services with military honors will be held on Friday, July 30, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in Sunset Cemetery at the Illinois Veterans Home. Interment will be in Sunset Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in All Faiths Chapel at the Illinois Veterans Home. Memorials are suggested to the Illinois Veterans Home Activities Fund.
