John L. ‘J.J.’ Johnson

John L. ‘J.J.’ Johnson, age 84, of Quincy, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 20, 2023 in his home. He was born on May 6, 1938 in LaGrange, MO, the son of Leonard and Lillian B. (Douglas) Johnson. He married Louella Clay on June 5, 1982. She survives.

J.J. as many know him worked over two decades for Local Union 919 where he dedicated some of his time helping build the new Quincy Memorial Bridge and Flynn Stadium. He devoted his most precious times loving on his countless grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. And he was definitely no stranger in the local bars. He was an amazing storyteller! He also enjoyed fishing and watching his favorite teams, a true Bears, Cubs and Spurs fan.

IN addition to his wife, he is also survived by:
CHILDREN: John Shelton, Kevin Shelton (Cynthia), Dino Jackson, Carmen Jackson Smith (Bryan Smith), Deandrea Dickson (Cortez), Altheia Buckner (Shekana), Michelle Dent (James), Phyllis Dean (Darrell), Crystal Weathers, Derek Lilly, Eugene Jones, Kecia Watt, Daniel Wayne Clay (Sarah), William Abbey, Kyra Davis (Phillip), Janae Weathers and Terran Lilly.
Louella and John also raised their grandson Shandall Hickman (Kelsey), a niece Latoshia Tipsord (Jason) and also seen as a daughter, Tamera Starks.
SIBLINGS: Melva Nixon (Delano), Claude Johnson, Stevie Ball (Sharon), Valerie Crider (Stefan) and Elizabeth James.
Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, a son Chris Orange, a grandchild Brittney Garrard, a sister Edna Phillips and a brother Lonzell Curtis Johnson.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2023 at 11:00 AM in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Thursday at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home from 10:00 Am until the time of the services at 11:00. Memorials may be made to the wishes of the family. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

    There are no words to express my feelings. I know I lost an awesome uncle. He was outgoing, funny and was loved by many. You’ll be missed Uncle Sonny. May you rest in peace.

    I worked on the Quincy bridge when JJ did. It has been many years ago but I still remember him. My deepest sympathy goes out to all his family.

    My prayers and condolences go to Mrs. Louella and the whole family. John was a great man who treated everyone with respect. He will be truly missed and never forgotten. I am blessed to have gotten the chance to meet him.
