John “Jack” Herman Kahs

John “Jack” Herman Kahs, 86, of Quincy, died Sunday April 23, 2023. He was born on July 12, 1936, in Quincy, a son of Frank Sr. and Amy (Niekamp) Kahs. Jack was a graduate of Christian Brothers High School. He married Diana Crabbe in St. Boniface Catholic Church on Nov. 22, 1958, after meeting one another while ice skating on the Quincy Bay. They were married for nearly 60 years. She preceded him in death on November 3, 2018. They were members of St. Francis Catholic Church.

Jack joined the U.S Army in October of 1959 where he was a member of the competitive rifle team. After his service in the Army, he joined the Quincy Police Department where he was a well-respected patrol officer, firearms training officer, and was instrumental in starting the Quincy Police Department pistol range. He retired from the QPD in 1987 after 23 years of service. After his retirement, he continued serving the community for 8 more years as a Chief Park Ranger for the Quincy Park District.

Jack enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing, and woodworking. He was an excellent craftsman that took pride in every piece that he hand-crafted and branded with his and Diana’s names. Jack and Diana shared a love for traveling and being outdoors. The two of them traveled across the country in their motorhome making many memories and friendships along the way. One adventure they both cherished was a hot air balloon flight over their Florida home in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary.

They both enjoyed spending time with family, especially their grandchildren and great-grandchildren who always brought a smile to their faces and so much joy to their lives. Jack will be missed greatly and forever remembered as a loving husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa.

He is survived by three daughters, Mary Ann Hyer (Steve), Linda Wingerter (Brent), Karen Thomas (Jeff); seven grandchildren, Drew Kaufman, Shawn Kaufman (Christina), Hayley Harvey (Justin), Heather Meyer (Bryan), Kristen Zahm (Derek), Steven Thomas, and Lauren Balzer (Alan), nine great-grandchildren, and brothers-in-law Dennis (Rose) Crabbe, Richard Crabbe, and sister-in-law Kay Kahs.

In addition to his wife, Jack was preceded in death by his parents, a brother: Frank Kahs Jr. and a son-in-law: David Kaufman.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 28, 2023 at 9:30 AM in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:00 AM in St. Francis Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary Cemetery with military rites conducted at the cemetery by the American Legion Post #37 and the Macomb National Guard Honor Detail. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Mississippi Valley Hunters and Fishermen’s Association.

    He was a good guy and a good cop! I enjoyed knowing him when I was on the Quincy Police Department!

    Sorry for your loss. We have known Jack for many years and always enjoyed talking to him. I will always remember the fishing lure earrings he had made for me! RIP.

    He was a good officer and I enjoyed working with him as a dispatcher when the city was on 5th street side of the courthouse . Thoughts and prayers are with the families.
