John “Jack” Cosgrove, I
John “Jack” Cosgrove, I age 87, of Quincy, died on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Sunset Home. John was born in Quincy, IL on November 8, 1935, son of William and Edith (Willard) Cosgrove. Jack joined Wanda (Atteberry) Smith in marriage in 1982, she survives.
Jack worked for Motorola before working and retiring from Moorman Manufacturing after thirty-seven years. After his retirement, Jack worked at Buford Ward Chevrolet.
Jack was a graduate of Quincy Notre Dame in 1953 and was proud to have been a member of the U.S. Army Reserves. He was a lifelong member of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church.
Jack loved working in his yard and around the house. Merle Haggard could often be heard playing on his radio. He greatly enjoyed his classic cars but was also known for riding his bike to work and around town. John and Wanda rode their bicycles and walked many miles together throughout the years.
He and Wanda were members of the Quincy Family YMCA for over forty years. John enjoyed sharing Werther’s Originals with the wonderful staff at the YMCA.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda; his sons, John Cosgrove,II of Quincy, Jeff L. Cosgrove (Elizabeth) of Anthem AZ and Jerald C. Cosgrove of Quincy. Stepchildren Wanita F. Thompson of Bloomington IL, Kevin L. Smith of Quincy, Scott O. Smith (Jeannine) of Quincy. Jack is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren great-great grandchildren and best friend and beloved dog, “Mattie Sue,” who visited Jack regularly at Sunset Home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Ned Bremser and brother and sister-in-law, William and Rose Cosgrove.
Funeral services will be held on Friday May 19, 2023, beginning at 9:30 AM with a prayer service at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM St. Francis Catholic Church in Quincy IL. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Quincy Humane Society or to the YMCA.
