John E. Metzger

John E. Metzger, age 81, of Mendon, IL died on Friday, March 11, 2011 in Blessing Hospital. He was born on November 15, 1929 in Quincy, IL the son of Michael & Leona (Willer) Metzger. He married Rosemary Neisen on November 19, 1949 in St. Joseph Catholic Church. She survives.

Mr. Metzger was a life-long farmer. He grew up on a Guernsey dairy farm at Mill Creek, east of Quincy. John and his brothers delivered their milk to people in town on their way to St. Francis school in Quincy. John and Rosemary started their own farm in 1961 when they purchased a farm east of Ursa. They continued to raise grain and livestock there for the next 50 years.

Mr. Metzger served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of the Bear Creek American Legion where he served as a commander. He was also a founding member of the Adams County Beef Producers and a former member of Mendon Unit 4 school district.

Mr. Metzger was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church where he was a member of the Holy Name Society.

In addition to his wife he is also survived by:
THREE CHILDREN: Steven Metzger and his wife Teresa of Ursa, IL; Laurie Peters of Bettendorf, IA, and Cheryl Geitner of Knoxville, IL
SEVEN GRANDCHILDREN: Stephanie Metzger, Katelyn Metzger, Kristi Metzger, Kristen Peters, Conner Peters, Matthew Geitner and Annie Geitner.
ONE BROTHER: Raymond Metzger
and TWO SISTERS: Rosemary Neisen and Lucille Lowe.
Numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.

Mr. Metzger was preceded in death by his parents, one sister: Betty Jansen and one brother: Martin Metzger.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 14, 2011 at 8:45 in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home in Quincy and at 9:30 in the St. Edward Catholic Church in Mendon, IL. Interment in Sunset Cemetery of the Illinois Veterans Home with military rites conducted at the cemetery by the Bear Creek American Legion Post 823. Visitation will be held on Sunday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 with a Parish Prayer service at 6:30 PM. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to St. Edward Catholic Church.
