John A. “Herky” Ludwig
John A. “Herky” Ludwig, age 80, of Quincy, died on Thursday, February 04, 2016 at 6:00 a.m. in the Illinois Veteran’s Home. He was born on June 30, 1935 in Quincy, a son of Arnold J. & Agnes Marie (Johannes) Ludwig. He married Mary E. Juette on February 13, 1960 in Quincy. She preceded him in death on December 23, 2013.
Herky was a truck driver for Gem City Distributers. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Japan during the Korean War.
He was a member of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church.
Herky enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and golf. He treasured time spent with his family at the camp in Missouri. From a young age, was known to be ornery and was given the nickname “Herky” after a cartoon character with similar traits.
He is survived by two sons, Ken Ludwig and his wife Penny and Bob Ludwig and his wife Pam, all of Quincy; four grandchildren Sarah (Trevor) Lamis of Atlanta, GA, Andrew (Kathryn) Ludwig of Oregon, Eric East of Canton, MO and Cody (Laura) Cook of Quincy; four great grandchildren Layla East of Canton, MO and Kanon, Kage & Krew Cook of Quincy; and sisters, Juanita “Neetz” (Don) Heckenkamp, Pat Sloan, and Sally (Ed) Lillig of Aurora, IL. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
In addition to his wife, Mary, and his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Richard “Dick” Ludwig and two sisters, Sandy Gallaher and Dorothy Maxwell.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:00 in St. Francis Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military honors conducted at the cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Catholic Church.
I’m so sorry for your loss. As I sit here and remember Herky I cannot help but smile as I remember him being the master of the granny shot on backyard hoop, all the hours spent waterskiing at his river camp.Herky had wonderful sense of humor like when he used to rearrange the furniture when Bob would come home late. This gift of humor is one of the greatest gifts one can leave. I will always remember Herky with a heavy heart and a smile on my face.

My late husband was a very good friend of Herky. Everyone loved him–especially the bowling team. We had so much fun with Herky and Mary. I’m sure they are together now!
