Joan M. Dietrich

Joan Mary Dietrich, age 77, of 911 Cherry, Quincy, died on Thursday, October 24, 2013 in her home, where she was raised and where she raised her family. She was born on Flag Day — June 14, 1936 in Quincy, a daughter of Joseph Nicholas & Marie Elizabeth (Bohne) Durand. She married Richard W. Dietrich on January 26, 1957 in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Quincy. He survives.

Joan was a graduate of St. Rose of Lima Grade School and Notre Dame High School. While attending high school, she enjoyed and was proud of her time in the Schola singing club. She currently was a member of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church.

She worked for the Illinois Veteran’s Home until her retirement after nearly 20 years of employment.

In addition to her husband, Richard, she is survived by a son Edward Dietrich of Quincy; daughters, Anita Steinway and her husband Fred, Barbara Holthaus, of Quincy and Tracey Boll and her husband Brad of Bloomington, IL; and five granddaughters: Janetta Steinway, Grace Holthaus, and Liz, Emily, and Sarah Boll; and a Goddaughter, Donna Durand and Godson, Kevin Dietrich.

Joan was the last of her siblings to survive; she was preceded in death by her son, Daniel Dietrich, her parents, brothers Patrick and James Durand, and sisters Janet Duncan and Barbara Campbell.

Joan loved couponing and doing word searches. She also enjoyed shopping, gardening, and canning. She was a great cook and baker. Everyone loved family reunions, where Joan would bring her favorites. She spent her life caring for her family and putting them before herself. She had a heart the size of Texas and was a generous soul. Her humor and loving demeanor will be greatly missed.
