Joan Dorothy Sturhahn

Joan Dorothy Sturhahn, age 90, of Quincy died on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 in Sunset Home surrounded by family.  She was born on July 13, 1932 in Quincy, the daughter of Roy E. & Alvina G. (Vosse) Daegele.  She married Donald W. Sturhahn on May 2, 1953.  He preceded her in death on September 3, 1977. 

 

Joan worked at Sturhahn Jewelers from her husband’s death in 1977 until her retirement in 1997.  Prior to this, Joan worked for several years at Halbach-Schroeder Department Store and South Side Bank before staying home to raise her family.

 

Joan was a long time member of Altrusa International and an honorary member of the Quincy Boat Club. She spent many years on the Mississippi River, first with her father and later with her husband Don and her children. Her time spent boating and at her river camp continued until her death. In her earlier years, she was a Cub Scout leader and softball and volleyball coach at St. Dominic School. She was well known amongst her family and friends for her collection of shot glasses from around the world. Joan was also an avid fan and supporter of QU athletics. One of her greatest pastimes was to watch and support her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their many activities. She also took great pleasure in being the one to give them all their first ever taste of ice cream.

 

Joan is survived by: 

            THREE CHILDREN: Carol Rakers (Bob) of Quincy; Steve Sturhahn (Carol) of Quincy and Ann Scott (Mark) of Liberty. 

            GRANDCHILDREN: Matthew Rakers (Krystle), Lynn Bias, Martin Rakers (Adrian), Andrew Rakers (Tina), Christopher Sturhahn (Meghan), Jeffrey Sturhahn, Sarah Stegeman (Kyle), Cray Scott (Whitney), Breanne Scott, Holly Scott (Trell Scott) and Maren Scott. 

            GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Lucianna, London, Lincoln and Layla Rakers; Kalil Taylor, Stanton Tate, Jr., Drea, Anthony and Zion Bias; Owen, Everett and Georgia Rakers; William, Stacia and Bennett Rakers; Albert, Chiara, Charles, Juliana, Peter, Philomena and Henry Sturhahn; David Barry; Preston, Kathlynn, Carolynn and Landon Sturhahn; Derrick, Shawn and Nicole Stegeman; Brayln and Brycen Scott; Kellen Mangan; Taylin and Myah Scott. 

            Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. 

 

In addition to her husband, Joan was also preceded in death by a granddaughter Julie Barry, a great-grandchild Michael Stegeman and two siblings: Marian Detmer and Phyllis Scheets. 

 

Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 13, 2023 at 11:30 AM in St. Peter Catholic Church.  Interment in Calvary Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church from 10:00 AM until the time of the services at 11:30 AM.  Memorials may be made to Quincy Notre Dame, Quincy University Athletics or to the Julie Sturhahn Barry Mental Health Assistance Fund at Transitions.  The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
