Joan Ruth Carlyle, age 89, of the Maple Lawn Nursing Home, Palmyra, formerly of Quincy, IL, died on Thursday, July 13, 2017 in the Home. She was born on January 11, 1928 in Decatur, IL to Harry and Beulah (Nowlin) O’Heren.

As a child, her family moved to Quincy, IL. In 1949, she graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing with a R.N. Degree and then worked there as a nurse. She later received a B.S. Degree in Sociology at Quincy College.

While still living in Quincy, IL, she was a Secular Franciscan for over 50 years, a Lady in the Knights of Columbus, served as a Communion Minister at a Nursing Home, and a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts.
In later years, she also worked as a R.N. in the U.S. Military Hospitals in South Carolina.

Joan is survived by her children Patrick (Julie) Carlyle, Douglas Carlyle, Daniel (Cindy) Carlyle and Barbara (Ken) Burnett, ten grandchildren, one brother John O’Heren, and two sisters Rosemary Westfallen and Patricia O’Connor. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son Mark Carlyle, brother Charles O’Heren and sister Helen O’Heren.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at 9:00 AM in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a Secular Franciscan Service at 5:30. Memorials may be made to the Charity of the Donor’s Choice.
