Jesse “Hal” Jameson

Jesse “Hal” Jameson, age 92, of 2931 Bluff Ridge Dr., Quincy, died on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 in Good Samaritan Home. He was born on October 4, 1920 in Toronto, Ontario Canada, a son of George Charles & Mabel (Smith) Jameson. He first married Johnette Hatch and she preceded him in death. He married Bonnie Webster on May 25, 1973 in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Nauvoo, IL. She survives.

Hal served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 13th Airborne Division and later retired with the rank of Major in the U.S. Army Reserves.

He received his Bachelor of Science Degree and his Master’s Degree in history from the University of Utah. He also received a Master of Library Science Degree from the University of Denver.

Hal was a records requisition specialist in the conservation and preservation of vital records and historic documents for the Genealogical Society of Utah. He was a faculty member at South Eastern Iowa Community College in Keokuk, IA and had worked as the Assistant State Archivist for the State of Colorado.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Hal faithfully read scriptures and was devout in his faith. His ability to speak fluent French, his expertise in research and in history was invaluable while on his Mission in France where he assisted with archiving ancient records following World War II.

He studied family history and genealogy, and he enjoyed photography. Hal was an avowed reader, he loved learning and in particular studying and reading about the Civil War.

Hal’s love for his family and the joy of spending time together was most important to him. He liked bulldogs and he was known for sporting a newsboy cap.

In addition to his wife, Bonnie, he is survived by children: Noblesse Martinez of Ignacio, CO, Elisa Bird of Aztec, NM, Marcia Edmonds of Cashmere, WA, Michael Cobb of Poteau, OK, Lansford Jameson of Indianapolis, IN and Susan Cobb of Quincy; twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son Marcus Jameson, Bonnie’s infant son Randy Cobb, his first wife Johnette, two brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 30, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints by Bishop Nathan Seaman. Interment will be in Sunset Cemetery with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post #37 and the Illinois National Guard Military Honors Detail. Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home and Monday beginning at 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at church. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to General Missionary Fund at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Quincy.

    What a joy it was for me to get to know Hal in my capacity as a chaplain at the Illinois Veterans’ Home. He was a humble and prayerful man – who certainly knew the Lord. Hal was a light to many and will be very much missed. May he rest in the peace of Jesus!
