James F. Steinkamp, age 94, of Quincy, died on Friday, December 9, 2022 in Sunset Home.
Jim was born on June 29, 1928 in Quincy, the son of Ferd and Rosina (Genenbacher) Steinkamp. He married Marjorie Kuhn on November 20, 1954 in St. John Parish, Quincy. She survives.

Jim attended St. Michael School and graduated in 1948 from Quincy High School. He attended Quincy College graduating in 1953 with a B.S. degree from University of Illinois and a master’s degree in 1959. Jim served his country in the U.S. Army from September 1953 to September 1955. After completing his time in the U.S. Army he was employed as a soil scientist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture; Soil Conservation Service from December 1955 until his retirement in September 1985.

Earlier in his life he participated in several conservation organizations. Jim was a crusader for social justice, including the civil rights movement, and the protection of the rights of the unborn. Later in his life he was active in the pro-life cause and various religious organizations and was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus. Jim belonged to and was an ardent volunteer for the Right to Life. He was a member of the Human Relations Council and the Serra Club. Jim was an active member of St. Peter Catholic Church where he was a lector and was a member of the Social Concerns Committee at the church. Jim helped to teach PSR classes for both elementary and high school age kids throughout the years. Jim also enjoyed swimming a few laps at the Quincy YMCA and played water volleyball on Friday mornings.

Jim’s life was a reflection of his conservative moral, social, and religious beliefs. He valued hard work and dedication to God and family.

Jim’s pride and joy was his 70 acres of woods. Jim loved nothing more than spending the day working in his woods, manicuring the trees and undergrowth with his pruning saw and chain saw. He loved fostering growth, maturation and harvesting of his forest.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Michael (Madeline) Steinkamp of Los Alamos, NM, Catherine (Jack) Mikelson of Chandler, AZ and Susan Steinkamp;
His sister: Florence (Tom) Dietrich;
brother-in-law, Bill Jansen; sisters-in-law, Janet (Ray) Allison, Barbara (Stephen) St. Marie and grandchildren: Jennifer Mikelson, Julie (Brandon) Hill and Jamie (Justin) Stein, Henry Steinkamp, William Steinkamp, George Steinkamp, Arthur Steinkamp, Charles Steinkamp, and Margaret Steinkamp.
Great Grandchildren: Lillian and James Hill.
Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Siblings: Charles (Rita) Steinkamp, Mildred (Virgil) Bockhold, Elmer (Rosetta) Steinkamp, Richard (Edna) Steinkamp, Alvera (Sylvester) Bockhold.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the wonderful staff of Sunset Home for the kind and thoughtful care they gave to Jim. They gave him comfort, dignity and respect in his final days.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 16, 2022 at 12:00 Noon at St. Peter Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church on Friday from 10:30 Am until the time of the services at 12:00 Noon. Memorials may be made to St. Peter Catholic Church or to Quincy Notre Dame High School or to Right to Life. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
