James “Jim” Ulm
Jim R. Ulm, 60, of 2608 South 18th St, Quincy, died at 6:02 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 27, 2014) in Blessing Hospital. He was born January 11, 1954, in Peoria, the son of Albert B. Ulm and Helen G. (Wann) Ulm. On April 30, 1994, he married Jane Marie Dietrich in Quincy. She survives.
Ulm was a 1972 graduate of Liberty High School and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois in 1976. He held Graphic Artist and Advertising positions at Pioneer Advertising, Quintron, Glenayre and Broadcast Electronics. In 1991, he proudly opened Signs In Time. With his eye for creativity and design, he left his mark on the community through the business that he and his wife Jane owned and operated for 23 years.
Ulm faithfully served with several organizations in the community. He was a member of the Harley Owner Group (H.O.G.) and ABATE. He served as President of the Quincy Regional Crime Stoppers Board of Directors in 2011, completed the Citizens Police Academy and was a Chamber of Commerce Ambassador. He shared his love of motorcycles and riding by facilitating the Motorcycle Rider Program with SIU-C. Ulm was also a gun enthusiast and loved music of all kinds. He was a member of Vermont Street Methodist Church.
Ulm was instrumental in establishing the “QPD-HOG Campaign” to train and equip new QPD Motorcycle Officers. He received the Community Involvement Award from Neighborhood Watch in recognition of making the Quincy area a better place to live in 2002. In 2006, Ulm received the Citizen Crime Prevention Award from the Quincy Exchange Club and was honored as Outstanding Board Member of the Year by the Illinois State Crime Stoppers Association.
Survivors in addition to his wife Jane include his mother Helen (Wann) Ulm (Quincy); daughter Jennifer (Willie) McArtor (Edwardsville, IL); daughter Emily (Tim) Miller (Quincy); step-daughter Nicole (Stacy) Rabe (New York, NY); grand-daughter Madison McArtor; sister Linda Ulm (Corydon, IN); father-in-law Kenny Dietrich; sisters-in-law Chris (Ben) Dever, Cindy (Darin) Dietrich, Ginger (Todd) Obert; brothers-in-law Mike Dietrich, Kevin Dietrich, Brad (Gina) Dietrich; many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father, Albert B. Ulm, and mother-in-law, Virginia Dietrich.
A funeral service is planned for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Quincy Regional Crime Stoppers or City of Quincy PDHOG or to a memorial in Jim’s name being established for his grandchildren’s future education.
Jane, I was so shocked to hear of Jim’s passing! You guys were wonderful friends to us for many years in Quincy. Thanks for the friendship and the memories.I pray God’s peace will be yours.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Jim’s family. I, Darlous,, lived by Jim, Linda, Albert, and Helen, when I was younger. In fact , Jim was in our wedding when we got married 43 years ago. He will be greatly missed by everyone. I have very good memories of Jim growing up. May God bring his family great comfort at this trying time.

Jane and family, My heart is broken for the loss of one of the greatest guys I ever had the pleasure of knowing and calling my friend.. I could speak for hours on how many times the two of you have made my life a little bit better. The many times Jim has done heartfelt things for me..
