James ‘Jim’ Bangert, age 90, of Quincy, died on Monday, August 15, 2022 in the Golden Good Shepherd Home. He was born on June 2, 1932 in Quincy, Illinois the son of Walter and Amelia (Haxel) Bangert. He married Helen ‘Pat’ Sullivan on February 2, 1957 in St. John the Baptist Rectory. She preceded him in death on February 21, 2013.

Jim was a 1950 graduate of Liberty High School. He worked as a machinist for Gardner Denver for 39 years. Jim served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was proud to have been able to attend a Great River Honor Flight in October of 2013.

Jim was an avid quail hunter with his friend Dick Wiewel for many years. He was a coach for youth boys baseball and basketball, girls softball and basketball. He was a member of the Killen-McClain club, the precursor to the Quincy Notre Dame Booster Club. He was also a member of the Mart Heinen Club at Quincy University. He was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was an usher for many years and visited nursing home residents. He volunteered many hours at St. John the Baptist Church and School. After his retirement, Jim also volunteered at the Illinois Veterans Home. He was a member of the Camp Point VFW and the Clayton American Legion and the Mississippi Hunters and Fisherman Association. He was also well known for his fish and chicken frying. He would cook for the Quincy Notre Dame Sports Award Banquets with his cooking team for many years. He took the greatest joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jim is survived by:
TWO CHILDREN: Bruce Bangert and his wife Sue of Springfield, IL and Barb Nisbet of Quincy.
THREE GRANDCHILDREN: Sara Davis (NC1 Aaron) of San Diego, CA: Allison Dokey of New Berlin, IL; and Natalie Delp (Aaron) of Quincy.
THREE GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Charlotte Davis, Graham Davis, Maelyn Dokey.
SISTER: Betty Kestner
Numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives including his sisters-in-law Jo Sullivan and Janet Sullivan, a brother-in-law: Tim Sullivan (Debbie) also survive.

In addition to his wife, Jim was also preceded in death by his parents, sisters Eleanor Echternkamp, Dorothy Boling Marshall, Ruth Marshall, and brothers: Robert Bangert, Garner Bangert, and Gerald Bangert and a brother in infancy.

Until the end, Jim was always concerned with his family’s well-being and took great care of them.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Golden Good Shepherd Home for the wonderful care they gave to Jim.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at 11:00 AM in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Interment in Greenmount Cemetery with military rites conducted at the cemetery by the American Legion Post #37 and the National Guard Honor Detail. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday morning from 9:30 until the time of the services at 11:00. Memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran School or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
