I am Shane’s first wife, and the mother of three of Jim’s grandchildren, Celeste, Samantha, and Shannon. Our entire family is praying that God comforts you in your time of grief, that He ease your sorrow and let you remember only the good, not the bad, and only the laughter, not the tears.

I’d like to share a verse that was read at my mother’s funeral last year, and extend an offer to reflect on these poignant words to all of you at this time of loss. Remember, Jim is gone from you, but he has arrived and lives on somewhere else.

“I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads its white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. It is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch it until at length it hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come together to mingle with each other.

Then someone at my side says “There, it is gone!”

    “Gone where?”

Gone from my sight. That is all. It is just as large in mast and hull and spar as it was when it left my side and it is just as able to bear the load of living freight to its destined port.

Its deminished size is in me, not in it. And just at the moment when someone at my side says: “There, it is gone!” There are other eyes watching it coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout: “Here it comes!”

    And that is dying.”

    Henry Van Dyke

    God bless all of you.
