James A. Vogel age 88, formerly of 622 Hamilton, Quincy, died on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at 12:20 a.m. in the Illinois Veteran’s Home, or as he fondly called it: The Soldiers and Sailors Home. He was born September 4, 1927 in Melrose Township, Il the son of Frank J. and Julia B. (Herold) Vogel. On July 27, 1957 he married Jennie Lou George in Liberty. She preceded him in death on October 10, 2010.

Mr. Vogel was a retired Teamster truck driver. After his proud truck driving career, he drove for Quincy Notre Dame sports and band groups until his second retirement.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Vogel was a member of the former St. Dominic Catholic Church and a current member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.

He was a talented musician. His musical talents began at a very young age as he watched his mother and would often times go with her to play at dances to earn money for the family. He could play a variety of instruments; guitar, fiddle, and harmonica to name a few. Over the years, many weekends were spent with family and friends having “jam sessions”. Mr. Vogel spent many years playing in country western music bands but most notably was the lead guitar player for Glennis and the Country Gentleman.

In addition to playing music, his favorite hobbies included taking walks, playing cards, gardening, and watching the birds and squirrels.

Survivors include his four daughters, Julia Parrish and husband Larry; Janice Vogel all of Quincy; Jill Wellman and her husband Andrew of St. Charles, IL; Jamie Klingele and her husband Keith of Liberty, IL; Eight grandchildren, Ryan (Jayme) Zanger of Ankeny, IA; Lindsay Zanger of Quincy; Zachary Parrish of Ames, IA; Nicholas and Brooke Wellman of St. Charles, IL; Cortney, Skylar and Aden Klingele of Liberty; Two great-grandsons, Kieyran Zanger and Mahkayl Hill both of Quincy. Numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sisters, Cecilia Simonson and Loretta Feld Garnett and four brothers, Herbert, Frank, Raymond and Virgil “Dick” Vogel.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Illinois Veterans Home, particularly the staff at Schapers A and Markword 2 for their constant support and loving care to Mr. Vogel and his daughters. Heartfelt thanks also to Blessing Hospice Palliative Care.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at 9:15 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:00 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church by the Rev. Thomas Hagstrom. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Duker & Haugh. Interment will be at St. Anthony Cemetery with military honors conducted at the cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Dominic Catholic School or to Quincy Notre Dame High School.
