Jack Farwell
Jack Farwell, 92, of St. Vincent’s Home, died March 24, 2012, in the home.
He was born in Bowen, IL, a son of Dr. Harry Russell and Ida Mable Califf Farwell. He was a graduate of Quincy Senior High School, Class of 1938. He married Rita Weibring on August 31, 1946 in the Quincy University Chapel. Rita died June 18, 2010.
During WWII he served in the U.S. Navy aboard a light cruiser, the USS Columbia. He was in in the fire control division in the Asiatic Pacific from 1942 to 1945.
Jack and his brother Russell owned and operated a silk screen printing business in the former city fire station at Sixth and Cherry from 1946 to 1956. In 1956 he went to work for PPG Industries and sold Pittsburg Paint in Western Illinois, Northeast Missouri and Southeast Iowa until he retired in 1984.
After their retirement Jack and Rita enjoyed spending the winters at their home in Fort Myers, Florida, golfing, swimming and collecting shells on the beaches. Spring through fall, he spent many happy hours golfing at the Quincy K of C course.
He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his son John Farwell II and his wife Mary Kay of Quincy, his daughter Carol and her husband Bill Gilliland of Quincy, two grandchildren, Matt Farwell and his companion Dr. Karen Straight of Kalispell, Mt, and Julie Stevens and her husband Bryan Stevens of West Point, IL, two great granddaughters, Grace and Caroline Stevens, and a sister-in-law, Stella Mae Weibring of Quincy.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife Rita, his parents, his sister Rosalie Farwell and his brother Russell Farwell.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2012 at 11:00 Am in St. Francis Catholic Church. Interment in St. Boniface Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday morning from 10:00 until the time of the services at 11:00. Memorials may be made to the Knights of Columbus TV Mass for Shut Ins or to the Blessing Foundation for Hospice. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
