Irene Longlett

Irene Longlett, age 93, of the Good Samaritan Home, formerly of Liberty, IL died on Friday, February 19, 2016 in the Home. She was born on September 13, 1922 in Blessing Hospital, Quincy, IL. She was the daughter of William J. Albert and Bessie Frederica (Vollbracht) Schieferdecker. After the death of her mother when she was six, her father later married Bertha Robertson who helped raise Irene. Irene married Merle E. Longlett on April 19, 1944 in St. Peter Lutheran Church in Coatsburg, IL. He preceded her in death on August 10, 2006. Irene attended Maplewood school in Camp Point through the 8th grade and graduated from Quincy High School in 1940. Irene attended Quincy Beauty Academy and worked in a shop for a short time before employment at SS Kresge. There she worked on the floor and later in the office until she married and moved to the farm in 1944. From around 1961 until 1988 Irene worked at the Liberty Community Unit #2 in the Superintendent’s Office serving as treasurer of the District.

Irene was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Liberty. She was a bowler for many years and liked to watch Cardinal baseball. She was a member of the Adams County Pork Producers. Irene liked to travel with her friends. She especially loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their get-togethers even when she resided at Good Samaritan Home. She also greatly enjoyed working on her family’s genealogy.

She is survived by:
THREE CHILDREN: Carolyn Graff and her husband Duane of Liberty; Joanne Holzgrafe of Quincy and Richard Longlett of Liberty.
THREE GRANDCHILDREN: Julie Graff, Jennifer Maguire and her husband Aaron and Jill Hicks and her husband Mark.
FIVE GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Hannah, Kayla and Kolton Maguire and Sophie and Maggie Hicks.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents and step-mother.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at 11:00 AM in the Zion Lutheran Church in Liberty. Interment in Xander Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home in Quincy and on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the time of the services at Zion Lutheran Church. Memorials are suggested to the Zion Lutheran Church or to the Good Samaritan Home.
