Herbert “Herb” Wellman
Herbert “Herb” Wellman age 88, of Quincy died on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 7:56 a.m. in Sunset Home. Herb was born February 25, 1929 in St. Louis, MO a son of Marie Wellman. Almost 60 years ago on January 18, 1958, he married Peggy Logsdon in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, and she survives.
Herb was a graduate of Notre Dame High School and Quincy College. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Herb was of the Catholic faith.
He was the Director of the Debutantes Drum & Bugle Corp, the Founder and Director of the Golden Eagle Color Guard, and he spent 30 years as a Recruiting Representative for the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Herb recruited and assisted over 60 area high school students in attending and graduating from West Point and the other service academies. He was responsible for obtaining the “Army Mule” named “Raider”, that was one of four mascot mules used at West Point during sporting events.
Herb was honored to host and serve as escort for General Paul Tibbets, pilot of the Enola Gay, when he visited Quincy to speak at the Illinois Veteran’s Home. He formerly served on the CYO Board of Directors, and was named to both the CYO and Quincy Notre Dame Hall of Fame. He was a member of the QND Football Chain Gang for many years, and in 2005, was the recipient of the Exchange Club’s Golden Deeds Award. Herb enthusiastically supported his children and grandchildren in their activities. He also enjoyed gardening, was an avid reader, and loved doing crossword puzzles with his “Chickie”.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Debbie Betz and her husband Mark of Columbia, MO; Greg Wellman of Quincy and Mark Wellman and his wife Robin also of Quincy. Three granddaughters, Emily Betz, Reagan Wellman and Jordan Wellman also survive.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Herb’s family gratefully acknowledges Dr. Adam Reyburn, Karen Powers (CNP), the amazing caregivers at Blessing Hospital, and especially the 4th Floor staff at Sunset Home.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 11:15 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Entombment will be in the Quincy Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #37 and the Illinois National Guard Military Funeral Detail. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project, The Great River Honor Flight, or The Quincy Humane Society.

To Herb’s Family,
As Ray (or “Raymond” to Herb) Heilmann so eloquently said in his eulogy today, Herb’s life touched so many others. Our stepson, David Marold, graduated in 2008 from West Point and Herb helped him with that appointment. After serving in Afghanistan, the Army put him through law school at Wash. U. in St. Louis. His wife just gave birth to identical twin boys and Herb would be gratified to know that the first picture we saw of the boys was David, in a West Point shirt, holding them dressed in matching outfits that said “Go Army” & “Beat Navy”. We will be forever grateful for Herb’s guidance.
Mr Wellman founded and directed the Golden Eagle Color Guard my senior year at QND. I was actually the very first Drill Sargent! He taught me responsibility and how to take charge. And although he was no pushover, he really let us know when we did a good job.
I’ve now been teaching dance for over 35 years and I think I owe him some thanks for teaching me to count, stay on beat and keep a line straight : )

I will miss seeing Herb at Career Nights. I represented the Air Force Academy/ROTC and he represented West Point. Herb was a good colleague and I will miss seeing him.
Debbie your father always had the safety & best interest of all of us gals on our Golden Eagle Colorgaurd trips. He was a perfectionist & always made sure we practiced hard at QND resulting in precision performances pregame, halftime, in parades, QND sporting events & pro- bowl games. The trips he arranged for us to march in The Cottonbowl, Peachbowl, Cherry Blossom festival & Superdome Superbowl were some of my most fond highschool memories thanks to your father. Herb was an awesome guy along with his family, they were very dedicated people to the Quincy community. I had the privilege of being in the Golden Eagle Color Guard during High School. Memories to cherish a lifetime. Thank you Herb, you will be missed.

Peggy and Family,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I spent many an hour with Herb at the CYO, at QND for games of all sorts, and in my offices at ND and Pittsfield discussing potential West Point students. He was a great man, dedicating his life to others, over himself. I will pray that God gives you the strength you need in the days ahead and that HE fills your heart and mind with only the best of memories of times spent with Herb.
