Helen G. Ulm, age 99, of the Illinois Veterans Home, formerly of Liberty, Illinois, died on Saturday, October 1, 2022 in the Home. She was born on March 23, 1923 in Mifflin, WI the daughter of Clifford J. & Eunice Pearl (Bowes) Wann. She married Albert B. Ulm on November 28, 1943 in Bonne Terre, MO. He preceded her in death on October 1, 2012.

Helen was a graduate of Bonne Terre, Mo High School, University of Illinois, and John Wood Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Art.

She served 2 1/2 years (March 1943 – November 1945) in the United States Coast Guard SPARS, enlisting as an apprentice seaman and discharged as Specialist X (Communications).

Helen was employed at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company of St. Louis, Brower Manufacturing of Quincy and Bower Real Estate, also of Quincy.

She was a member of the Adams County Homemakers Extension, a Cub Scout Leader and 4-H Leader of the Five Pointers. An avid painter, she was also a member of the 12th Street Artists Club.

Helen was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church for over 60 years serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and helping with the Faith Circle group.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda K. Ulm of Corydon, IN; a daughter in law, Jane Ulm of Quincy; two granddaughters, Jennifer (Willie) McArtor and Emily (Tim) Miller; a step granddaughter, Nicole (Stacy) Rabe; great grandchildren, Madison McArtor; Samuel, Leah and Abram Miller; and Max McWilliams; a sister, Doris (Bill) Green; a brother, Richard Wann; two sisters in law, Darlene Wann and Florabelle Liu. Numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, one son Jim R. Ulm, and siblings: Clifford Wann, Jr., William Wann and Robert Wann.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at 11:00AM in Faith Presbyterian Church. Interment in Quincy Memorial Park with military honors conducted at the cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10:00AM until the time of the services. Memorials may be made to Faith Presbyterian church or to Adams County 4-H Foundation. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
