Harold John Zopf

Harold John Zopf, age 96, of Quincy, died on June 14, 2023 in the Barry Community Care Center. He was born on November 22, 1926 in Quincy, the son of John and Mary (Schoenekase) Zopf. He was a graduate of Quincy Senior High School. He married Dorothy Bastert on June 30, 1951 in St. Rose Catholic Church. She survives. Harold was a buyer for Quincy Compressor Corp. from 1959 until his retirement in 1989.

Harold served in the United States Army Air Force during WWII.

He was a lifelong member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Elks, the South Side Boat Club, and the Eagles. Harold loved to play golf, cards and watch NASCAR. He also greatly enjoyed traveling.

In addition to his wife, he is also survived by:
THREE CHILDREN: Michael Zopf (Marilynne Wright Zopf) of Champaign, IL; David Zopf (Doris Acquaviva Zopf) of Hoschton, GA; and Brian Zopf (Donna Zopf) of Quincy.
SIX GRANDCHILDREN: Adam Zopf; Eric Zopf (Sarah); Victoria Zopf and Peter Zopf; and Bradley Zopf (Lydia) and Danielle Mercer (Nick).
SIX GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Haley and Frankie Zopf; Jonah and Micah Zopf; and Ralph and Henry Mercer.
A SPECIAL SISTER-IN-LAW: Marilyn Martin
Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Karen Zopf, and siblings: Edward Zopf, Loretta Strathmeyer, Virginia Metallo, Marie Kistner, Dorothy Milbert, Grace Belker, and Rita Zopf in childhood.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 19, 2023 at 9:30 am in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:00 am in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment in Greenmount Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Illinois National Guard Honor Detail and the American Legion Post #37 Honor Detail. Visitation will be held on Sunday afternoon from 3:00 until 6:00 PM at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Transitions of Western Illinois or to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.     Marilyn, I send you my condolences. I just saw where your brother-in-law passed away. He sounded like such an interesting man in because you were listed as his SPECIAL SISTER IN LAW, I can only imagine how good you must’ve been to him. Blessings to you and the rest of the family.

    Such a nice family.My dad worked with Harold at Conoco years ago. A game of cards from time to time great fun! Years later were neighbors off Monroe street . Prayers for your family ❤️🙏

    So sorry to hear of Harold’s passing. .My dad worked with Harold years ago at Conoco. Mom and dad had great fun playing a game of cards from time to time.

    Harold was always such a kind gentleman. We missed getting to see him at the monthly Quincy Compressor breakfasts lately. Sincere sympathy to Dorothy and Family. Sending prayers for comfort for Harold’s family during this difficult time.
