Guenter K. Dege
Guenter K. Dege, age 80, of 211 Anderson Court, died on Monday, November 9, 2015 in his home. He was born on July 3, 1935 in Duderstadt, Germany, a son of Willheim and Ilse (Jahn) Dege.
At the age of 21, Guenter came to the United States in 1956 on the ship SS America. He was sponsored by his uncle as he worked for him upholstering. Guenter was then drafted into the United States Army and served two years. While ice skating in South Park, he met the love of his life, Harriett Zens. They married on April 7, 1962 in Quincy. She preceded him in death on August 11, 2015. They are survived by two daughters: Angela Dege Diller and her husband Ivan and Anya Dege-Smith and her husband John all of Quincy. A brother Willheim Dege of Germany and a granddaughter: Olivia Smith. Other relatives still survive in Germany. Guenter’s passions in Germany were ice skating, snow skiing, badminton, and his German Shepherds. He found new passions in the United States such as boating, water skiing, fishing, camping, entertaining friends, and yodeling down the Mississippi River.
Guenter worked in the Mill Room at Huck Fixture Company and retired after 42 years. He learned and loved the trade of upholstering and his accomplished work is seen throughout the Quincy area. He had also been a shoe cobbler in Germany.
In addition to his wife, Guenter was also preceded in death by his parents, a grandson Andrew Georg Milton Irvin and a sister Waltroud Schmuck of Germany.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 6:00 PM in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home on Friday from 4:00 PM until the time of the services at 6. Memorials may be made to the Quincy Humane Society.
We were very sorry to hear about Gunter and Harriet. We hadn’t heard she passed away. We knew them both when we shared a mutual community zoning battle. We enjoyed working with them. Our Thoughts and Prayers are with the family at this time.
