Gregory William Holthaus

Gregory William Holthaus, age 82, of the Illinois Veterans Home, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012 in the home. He was born September 25, 1929 in Columbus, OH, a son of Aloysius & Rose (Reis) Holthaus. He married Jacqulynn Kron on August 22, 1953 in Quincy. He married Sharon (McCaughey) Schmelzle on February 14, 1992 in Quincy. She survives.

Greg was a carpenter with AJ Holthaus & Son prior to becoming Director of Maintenance at Quincy College, later Quincy University from which he retired in 1998. He attended St. Mary’s and St. Francis elementary schools and Notre Dame High School, all in Quincy.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 – 1951. Greg was a member of the Church of St. Peter. He was active in the Mart Heinen Club and Knights of Columbus.

Greg was an avid golfer & bowler. Greg also loved socializing with friends and family. He enjoyed sharing his carpentry skills working on remodeling projects and repairs at home and for family and friends. He and Sharon loved to travel.

In addition to his wife, Sharon, he is survived by sons, Robert Schmelzle and wife Justine of Seattle, WA, and Mark Schmelzle and wife Robin of Quincy; daughters, Gail DeGreeff and husband Lou, Kathy Spohr, Susan Sanders and husband Bill, Lisa Barnes and husband Dane, all of Quincy and Lynn Ehmen and husband Ryan of Springfield, IL; sixteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Jude Holthaus of Quincy; and sisters, Jeanette Crawford of Lansdale, PA and Collette (Mike) Haubrich of Quincy. Many nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Holthaus and Daniel Holthaus and two sisters, Imogene Schoenekase and Geraldine Hollister.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 4, 2012 at 10:00 AM in the Church of St. Peter by Msgr. Leo Enlow and Father Don Blickhan. Inurnment in St. Anthony Cemetery with military rites conducted at the cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 4:00 to 8:00 PM in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Greg Holthaus Scholarship Fund at Quincy University. Cards of Sympathy may be sent to the Holthaus family at 603 Gardendale, Quincy, IL 62301.
