Gordon W “Butch” Dobey, Sr., age 65, of 617 Elm Street, died surrounded by family on Sunday, November 26, 2017 in Blessing Hospital. He was born on September 2, 1952 in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Luther and Dorothy (Taylor) Dobey. Butch served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a Helicopter Crew Chief and an Aircraft Mechanic. After serving his country, he worked at Quincy Mack Truck Sales, later relocated to Austin, TX. and worked for Sysco Foods. Most recently, Butch worked for Bear Creek Woods. Butch has been retired for the past several years. He was of the Catholic Faith.
Butch or Butchy as he was affectionately referred to by those who loved him had many interests. Butch was no stranger to a charcoal grill. He was the King of Fajitas and Grilled Chicken. It didn’t matter if it was raining, snowing or sun shining he’d fire up the grill and be completely happy perfecting his art. One of his favorite past times was “wetting a worm” (fishing). Whether he was “competing with his son or sitting alone and enjoying the heat of the day or pouring rain, if he could wet a worm, you better believe he was doing it. Butch had a campsite on a lake in Hannibal, MO. for several years. Prior to getting seriously ill, this camp was his second home. Butch was actively involved in family life. When able, he enjoyed traveling to Texas to spend time with Salena’s family and his former wife, Estella “Star” Pendergrass and her family. Butch enjoyed wood working, watching the K.C. Chiefs (GO CHIEFS!!!!), and tinkering with just about anything. Butch was fond of “working” and interacting with customers at their family business, QUINCY’S MOST WANTED… . Butch shared a home with his son, Gordon “Dobey”, Lindsey, and Abigail “Stinky Winky”. Butch and Stinky Winky were almost inseparable. Even during times of chemotherapy, Butch would not turn away the affection of Stinky Winky. During his hospital stays, it was routine to find he and her laying in his hospital bed watching cartoons together. “Daddy Butch” as Lindsey affectionately referred to him was a shining example of a Father to her. During times of struggle for both Lindsey and Dobey, Butch was always ready with an ear, a kind word and a thought of inspiration or hope. Even when situations were grim, Daddy Butch’s love and support were unwavering. As much and as often as Daddy Butch needed support and comfort from Lindsey and Dobey, the same was always reciprocated. Lindsey and Butch developed a very intimate and loved filled relationship with each other. When not in the hospital, Lindsey was his Nurse and Caretaker. She accepted this responsibility with open arms and Butch was all too happy to have her in that role. The bond and trust that they formed was paramount. Even though there was miles between Butch and Salena “Baby Doll”, they stayed in contact as often as they could. Butch got handy with different internet apps to make this possible. From his hospital bed, Butch was able to walk Salena down the aisles during her wedding to Richard “Jerzy”. Butch was such a peaceful man, he maintained a relationship with his ex-wife Star and her husband Tod who also live in Texas. They would call each other to check up on one and other often. Star and Tod played a very active role in Butch’s life. When able to travel, it wasn’t anything unusual for Butch to visit and stay with them at their house. Correspondence through mail and phone was a regular activity for them. They truly have a love for each other that is like no other.
Butch is survived by: His Forever Mother-In-Law: Elida G Salazar of Austin, TX. His Friend and Former Wife: Estella Star Pendergrass of Austin, TX. Two Children: Salena Dobey Yates and her spouse Richard “Jerzy” of Lockhart, TX; and Gordon Wayne Dobey II and his wife Lindsey of Quincy. Thirteen Grandchildren: Unique Hendricks-Davis and her spouse SeaJay; John ‘JJ’ Hendricks, Derrick Hendricks and spouse Fantasy “Fanny” Morgan, Andre D’Agostino, Kade Yates, Sebastian Yates, Teresa Yates, Katelynne Shull, Kyley Dobey, Gordon Wayne Dobey III, and Abigail Dobey. 6 Great grandchildren. A sister: Sharon Scott. A brother: Roger Dobey. Brothers and Sister of the Salazar Family in Texas. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
Butch was preceded in death by his parents and Siblings: Edith Mae Dobey ’45-’62, Mildred Maxine Bunte 09-02-38 to 06-19-99, Luther “Dobey” Dobey 08-04-35 to 06-14-03, Patrica Ann Cook 09-02-41 to 11-04-12 . Butch, Maxine and Pat (his sisters) all shared the same birthday, in different years.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home. Interment in Benville Cemetery in Pike County with military rites conducted at the cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the family.
