Gerald Schutte
Gerald Schutte, age 85, of Quincy IL died on Friday, October 28, 2022. He was born on March 26, 1937 in Quincy the son of Leonard and Mathilda (Siebers) Schutte.
Jerry worked for St. John Parish in maintenance for 14 years, and then retired from the Quincy School District where he worked for 37 years as a custodian at Ellington Elementary School. He was well known for working with various school programs in the school district.
After retiring, Jerry kept busy restoring antique furniture, and he refinished hard wood floors and woodwork . He loved to go to antique shops and see old furniture.
Jerry was a very active member of the St. Rose Church when it reopened in 2009.He worked daily with friends, Paul Wellman and Ken Gibson and many others putting in thousands of hours in getting the rectory, church and hall ready for the Latin Mass. Jerry was like Mr. St. Rose himself. He always put St. Rose parish first. On Sundays, you could always see him at the 8 AM mass giving out bulletins.
Jerry is survived by:
Donna Schutte the mother of his four children -Sarah Warning (Kenneth) of Brimfield, IL; Amy Gooding (Ronnie) of Perry, MO; Steve Schutte (Angelica) of Quincy and Kevin Schutte (Jennifer) of Old Monroe, MO.
GRANDCHILDREN: Kevin Warning (Michelle); Shawn Warning and Ryan Warning (Alexis); Ashlee Gooding; Gracee Gooding and Rylee Wilson (Josh); Zach Schutte (Courtney), Andrew Schutte and Hayley Johnson; Gunner Schutte and Kannon Schutte.
GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Anthony, Claire, Audrey, Fluretta, Kye and Freya.
ONE BROTHER Roy ‘Curly’ Schutte (Naomi) and a sister-in-law: Norma Schutte. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
Jerry was preceded in death by siblings: Butch Schutte, Kenneth ‘Cotton’ Schutte and Joan Davis along with her husband Glen.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 4, 2022 at 9:30 AM at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home, and a Requiem at 10:00 AM at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 PM with a Rosary to be held at 6:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
Jerry was a man with a mission later in life: He wanted to make St. Rose Church and Parish a beautiful setting for worshippers and for the glory of God. Every week when we cleaned the church, Jerry had the altar to himself, and his work was an act of devotion. Afterwards, we enjoyed a meal together, and Jerry always stayed to clean up and put the hall back into order. He was a quiet man who didn’t talk much about himself, but his glorious actions over a lifetime of service, to schools and churches, were the most eloquent testimony of a man of humble faith and extraordinary devotion to the body of Christ during our brief stay on earth. I was blessed to know him.
Our deepest condolences to all the Schutte family! Your dad was one of a kind. We can hear him saying “check it out” as he entered beautiful heaven.
It was a great pleasure meeting and working with Jerry at St. Rose. Even up to weeks ago he was still helping clean the sanctuary there, helping with flowers every week, he was a true friend to many. The parish will surely miss him and his famous saying, CHECK IT OUT.
I always made sure he was important and the priests there as even the members will miss him.
He was truly a pillar of faith and goodness.
I will miss teasing him too.

My kids were at Ellington while Jerry was there. He was such a kind soul. He will be missed.
Jerry was a man who didn’t know a stranger. He welcomed al as friends. Now, Jerry, to quote you as you explore another part of God’s Kingdom, “Check it out”
