Gerald D. Smith
Gerald D. Smith, age 69, of 411 Hickory Point #6, Quincy, died on Monday, March 18, 2013 in Blessing Hospital. He was born on July 25, 1943 in Ripley, IL, a son of Harold & Margaret Ellen (Hall) Smith. He married Sheila Galligan on July 31, 1964 in Berlin, MA. She survives.
Gerald served in the Army during the Vietnam War.
He is a member of St. Francis Catholic Church. He was active in the Quincy Cursillo Movement. He also volunteered for the REC (Residents Encounter Christ) program in the Missouri Prison System.
Gerald had many hobbies throughout his life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and raising dogs in his early years. He enjoyed spending time on the river, where he taught his family and many of his children’s friends to water ski. He loved solving puzzles and always had one in progress. His newest hobby was making jewelry. Most of all, Gerald enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren who were the love of his life.
In addition to his wife Sheila, he is survived by:
TWO CHILDREN: Robert “Bob” Smith and his wife Kristi of O’Fallon, IL and Debra Beard and her husband Tim of Quincy
FOUR GRANDCHILDREN: Mackenzie Smith, Amber Smith, Brexton Beard and Delaney Beard
FOUR SISTERS: Shirley Llewellyn and her husband Don, Betty Ann Allen, Linda Cady and her husband Marvin and Sandra Yelliott and her husband Roger.
An aunt, Ruth Hall of Springfield, IL, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Wayne Smith.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
