Gerald B. Hummel
Gerald B. Hummel, age 91, of 4117 North 24th Street, formerly of 3509 Ellington Road, Quincy, died on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 in his home. He was born on August 9, 1923 in Quincy, a son of Edward and Dorothy (Brink) Hummel. On April 24, 1947 he married Wilma F. Lubbe in St. Anthony Catholic Church. She preceded him in death on August 7, 2008.
Mr. Hummel graduated from St. Michael School near Quincy. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with over-seas duty in Reykjavik and Keflavik, Iceland.
He was employed by Moorman Manufacturing for 38 years, retiring in 1985 as assistant superintendent of the research farm. In 1983, he was awarded the Wilson Caldwell Achievement Award from Moorman’s. After retirement, he enjoyed farming and his collection of old farm tractors. He also enjoyed traveling and camping.
He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society. He also was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and the Adams County Farm Bureau. Gerald served on the Boy Scout Troop #22 Committee for ten years, three of those years as chairman.
He is survived by a daughter, Ann Soltys and her husband Robert and a his son, Wayne Hummel and his companion, Peggy Litt, all of Quincy; grandchildren, Greg Soltys, Emily Soltys and Nick Hummel and his fiancee’ Megan Kistner, all of Quincy; great-grandchildren, Dalton, Owen & Brody; and his sister Mrs. Clara (Mike) O’Brien. Many nieces and nephews also survive along with all his friends and extended family at Steak & Shake.
In addition to his wife, Wilma, and his parents, he was preceded in death by two children in infancy, one sister Margaret Wolf and two brothers, Robert & Carl Hummel.
The family wishes to give many thanks to Dr. Larry Davis, Dr. Raymond Smith, Dr. Elie Chbeir, Dr. Rishi Ghannaker, the X-ray department at Blessing Hospital and all of their staff.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church by Fr. Roy Bauer. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military honors conducted at the cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Blessing Cancer Center, Austin’s Army at St. Francis or to the Knights of Columbus TV Mass for the Shut-Ins.
