George L. Newbanks, IV

George L. Newbanks, IV, age 85, of the Illinois Veterans Home, formerly of 3100 State, died on Monday, December 15, 2014 in the Illinois Veterans Home. He was born on January 18, 1929 in St. Louis, MO the son of George & Ruth (Clark) Newbanks III. He married Betty Kerkhoff. Mr. Newbanks was a graduate of Quincy High School and graduated from Gem City Business College. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Era. George was a retired Postal Employee.

George loved his family and spending time with them, especially his grandchildren. He also greatly enjoyed reading, going out to eat and cookouts. He was also a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by:
THREE CHILDREN: George Newbanks V and his wife Mary of Quincy; Russell W. Newbanks and his wife Trish of Shreveport, LA; and Therese McNary and her husband Robert of Lima, IL
ONE SISTER: Joy VandenBoom and her husband Dale of Quincy
11 Grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

George was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers: Paul & Ralph Newbanks, a sister: Jackie Harker and a half-sister: Norma Burns.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 9:30 AM in the All Faith Chapel of the Illinois Veterans Home. Interment in Sunset Cemetery of the Illinois Veterans home with military rites conducted at the cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at the All Faiths Chapel of the Illinois Veterans Home. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

    My deepest condolences to the family of an old friend and respected co-worker. George was always first with a smile and a helping hand. He embraced life, reveled in friendship, and dearly loved his family. RIP, George

    I am so sorry to hear of Georges passing. I met him while I worked at HCME. He was my buddy. I loved his sense of humor and his jokes. He always had a good story to tell. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. RIP George. Heaven has another angel, an ornery one.
