George A. Russell, Jr.

George A. Russell, Jr. age 74, of 1538 North 8th St. Quincy died on Friday, November 27, 2009 at 12:10 p.m. in Blessing Hospital. George was born on August 1, 1935 in Key West, FL, a son of George A. Russell, Sr. and Violet (Knowles) Russell. He was raised by his mother and step-father, Ellis Coulson. He married Florence Rocco 50 years ago on November 9, 1959 in Camden, N.J. and she survives.

George had worked as a janitor throughout his lifetime. He was retired after working several years at Vatterott College.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956-1960, and also served two years in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.

George was a member of Faith Christian Church. He was a dedicated Cardinal Baseball fan.

In addition to his wife, survivors also include:
a son, George E. Russell and his wife Lori of Quincy;
a daughter, Violet Bentley and her husband Brian of Wentzville, MO;
a step-daughter, Diana Jones of Quincy;
grandchildren, Amanda Bentley of Wentzville, MO; Brent, Holly and Christina Russell all of Quincy;
step grandchildren, step great and great-great grandchildren survive;
a sister in-law Loretta Rocco of New Jersey; two brothers in law and numerous cousins also survive.

George was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in Sunset Cemetery at the Illinois Veteran’s Home by the Rev. Henry Pratt. Military honors to be conducted graveside by the American Legion Post#37. There will be no visitation, but family and friends are invited to the graveside services.
Memorials are suggested to Faith Christian Church. Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

    I was deeply sadden to learn of George’s passing – he was a good friend and fellow co-worker – he loved his family and the Cardinals – I will always remember our regular discussions about the Cards and Tony LaRussa – George will be deeply missed by all of us – my sincere condolences to you Florence and the rest of your family
