Frederick Paul “Fred” Stephan age 90, of Quincy, died on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 in Sunset Home. Fred was born June 22, 1927 in Ottawa, IL a son of Frederick F. and Eda (Atwood) Stephan. He married Anne (Blakemore) Stephan on June 24, 1949 in Mariemont, OH. She survives.

Fred graduated from Western High School in Washington, DC and then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After completing his military service, he attended Cornell University where he received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in 1950 and a Master of Science in Agriculture in 1955. At Cornell he was elected to Tau Beta Pi national engineering honorary society.

The Stephan Family moved to Quincy in 1967. Fred worked for several local companies before starting Midland Computer Systems in 1979. In his retirement he worked on projects with Poepping, Stone, Bach & Associates. He was a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Fred was a man of many talents and interests. At different times he was involved with Junior Achievement, Rotary and Optimist clubs. He was a member of the Unitarian Church and served on the Board of Trustees. He had a life-long interest in photography. In his 30’s he experimented with developing film in the family bathroom and later in life he experimented with developing digital photographs with his computer. He played the guitar and several other instruments. He enjoyed flying, sailing, biking, camping, model railroading and bread and cookie baking. Most of all he loved gardening and sharing his gourmet sweet corn with his friends.

In addition to his wife Anne, survivors include his children, Margaret Holloway and her husband Dan of Spartanburg, SC; Sara Clapp and her husband David of Hixson, TN; David Stephan and his wife Fifi of Amagasaki, Japan; Jane Stephan of Los Angeles, CA; and Hightopper, the cat.

A sister, Louise DeJosé of Springfield, VA; one granddaughter, Alice Burnette and her husband Kevin Jr.; a step-grandson, Jason Fisher and his wife Dawn; two great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren, also survive.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; a son Frederick J. Stephan; a brother Walter Stephan and his wife Margret and a sister, Janet Greene.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A private family burial is planned.
