Evelyn Helen Hummel
Evelyn Helen Hummel, age 90, of Good Samaritan Home Cottages, formerly of 2054 Maple Street, Quincy, died on Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Blessing Hospital. She was born on September 8, 1924 in Quincy, a daughter of Emmett J. & Leota T. (Rees) Kientzle. She married Paul L. Hummel on May 12, 1948 in St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on January 26, 2004.
Evelyn graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing. She first worked as a registered nurse with St. Mary’s Hospital. She went on to work for Dr. Germann and Dr. Sinnock and retired in 1984 from the Illinois Veteran’s Home.
She was a lifelong member of St. Francis Catholic Church. She belonged to the Ladies of St. Francis and St. Mary’s Hospital Alumni. She was a volunteer for the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program.
Evelyn greatly enjoyed her grandchildren and was proud to be a great-grandma. She liked talking on the phone and playing dominos with her friends at Good Samaritan Home.
She is survived by two sons, Paul J. Hummel and his wife Diana of Richmond, IN and Daniel Hummel and his wife Debbie of Quincy; five grandchildren, Michelle (Stephen) Metropolis of Bluffton, SC, Melinda Hummel of Bloomington, IN, Amanda Hummel of Evansville, IN, Delaine (Jason) Terry of Brentwood, MO, and Danielle Hummel of Springfield, IL; great-grandchildren, Aaron & Matthew Metropolis. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to her husband, Paul, and her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Emmett (Mary) Kientzle and two grandsons, Derek & Dustin Hummel.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 29, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home by Fr. James Wheeler, O.F.M. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Knights of Columbus TV Mass for the Shut-Ins. www.dukerandhaugh.com
