Eugene “Gene” Koetters
Eugene “Gene” G. Koetters, 82, formerly of Quincy, IL, died Wednesday, August 29, 2012 surrounded by his family in his home in Carol Stream, IL. He was born on July 31, 1930, in Quincy, a son of Anthony and Florine Koetters. He married Rita McCaughey on August 18, 1951 at St. Rose Church in Quincy, who survives.
Gene graduated from Quincy Notre Dame in 1948 and, after working for a short while at Gardner Denver, served in the U.S. Army from 1951 – 1953. He then returned to Gardner Denver as an IBM operator for 13 years until moving on to Western Catholic Union. He devoted the second half of his life to the Knights of Columbus as a member for 34 years and as Treasurer for 12 years. He enjoyed working at bingo, playing golf, and visiting with his friends at the KC’s. He was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Notre Dame football.
Survivors in addition to his wife include eight children: Theresa Koetters (Jim Elsworth), Deanna (Robert) Christie, Timothy (Catherine) Koetters, Donna (Tom) Scherzer, Gary Koetters, Barb (Mike) Killion, Kevin (Susan) Koetters and Angela Koetters; fifteen grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and one brother, Gerald (Joan) Koetters.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Virgil Koetters.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Frances Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday evening from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to Quincy Notre Dame or the Knights of Columbus.
Rita, dear…..I was saddened to hear about Gene’s death. Tim just told me in a telephone conversation. I am so sorry. I remember well our high school days together, the fun we had, and the memories made. Fondly, Pat………
