Eugene “Gene” K. Sassen
Eugene K. “Gene” Sassen age 76, of 3121 Payson Rd. died on Sunday, December 16, 2012 in Blessing Hospital. Gene was born January 13, 1936 in Guttenberg, IA a son of Alfred E. Sassen and Hilda Marie (Miller) Sassen Meyers. He married Delorise Ann Taylor on November 5, 1957 in Nashville, TN and she preceded him in death on March 18, 2008.
Gene was an ironworker, who had worked for Tri-State Steel and Michelmann Steel Construction prior to his retirement. His ironworking skills were used in the construction of the WCU Building and at Gardner Denver’s facilities. After retiring, he was employed by Adams County.
He was a 1955 graduate of Notre Dame High School.
Gene had served on the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
He was of the Catholic faith. Gene was active in many organizations including the Elks, the Jaycees, the Lions Club, Twin Oaks and Local #577. He enjoyed cooking and would volunteer to help cook for local events whenever he could.
Gene’s survivors include his children, Dianna Clark and her husband Kirby of Canton, MO; Roger Sassen and his wife Barb of Lisle, IL; Anthony “Tony” Sassen and his wife Beth Ann of Quincy; Johnny Sassen and his wife Debbie of Lombard, IL and Eddie Sassen and his wife Gina of Glendale, AZ. A brother, Richie Sassen and his wife Kora of Venice, CA;16 grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and two brothers Roger and Donald Sassen.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. in Calvary Cemetery, by the Rev. Keith Ehresman. There is no visitation, but friends and family are welcome to attend the graveside services. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
