Eugene Clarence “Dutch” Clarke

Eugene Clarence “Dutch” Clarke, 91, of Quincy, died at 1:28 p.m. Sunday August 4, 2013 at his home.
Born February 21, 1922, in Quincy, Illinois, Mr. Clarke was the son of Robyn and Anna Marie Schwartz Clarke Sr.

He married Carmoleata Brown on June 28, 1945 in Hannibal, MO.
Mr. Clarke and his wife recently celebrated 68 years of marriage.

Mr. Clarke retired from Moorman’s Manufacturing after 34 years in the shipping department. In his younger years he owned Dutch Clarke’s Tavern on 7th and Hampshire. And, Mr. Clarke proudly served as a corporal in the Illinois Reserve Militia.

Mr. Clarke had a love of the river, hunting, fishing and looking for mushrooms, but most of all he loved camp life and his
friends at Jeeters located on the East Chute.

He was a lifelong member of Twin Oaks Club, South Side Boat Club, Ducks Unlimited, the National Rifle Association and the Mississippi Valley Hunter’s and Fisherman’s Association. He was also a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.

All who knew Mr. Clarke recall fondly that he was quick with a smile, likely followed by a joke. He was known for his famous “Dutch Burgers” that he gladly made for any and all who asked. Mr. Clarke also enjoyed skeet shooting, pitching horseshoes and loved to watch baseball especially his beloved Cubs.

Survivors include his wife Carmoleata and six children: Deborah Ann Kempf (significant other Bryan Bruns) of Quincy, David Clarke of La Manzanilla, Mexico, Daniel Clarke (Ann) of Seattle, WA, Eugene Clarke Jr. (Marcia) of Quincy, Thomas Clarke of Chicago, IL, and Kimberly Clarke Maisch (Todd) of Springfield, IL. A brother, Arthur (Lydia) Clarke of Aptos, CA along with many nieces and nephews also survive.

Other survivors include 5 grandchildren and 2 step grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 5 step great-grandchildren.

Mr. Clarke is preceded in death by his son Jeffrey Clarke, his parents and one brother and two sisters.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home by Rev. Don Blaeser, O.F.M. A private family inurnment will take place in Calvary Cemetery. There will be a memorial visitation from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at Duker & Haugh.

    Carm, Debbie and family. I am deeply saddened about the passing of Dutch. He was a great friend to my father and I always enjoyed talking with him, he always had a joke and a smile to always brighten your day.
