Ernest “Ernie” W. Heierle, age 95, of Quincy and formerly of Macomb, died Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Quincy.

He was born January 19, 1927 in Los Angeles, CA, the son of Julius E. and Anna Altherr Heierle. He married Opal E. Geltmacher on October 19, 1957 in Costa Mesa, CA and she preceded him in death on June 15, 2022.

Mr. Heierle was a graduate of Newport Beach (CA) High School and a twenty-year U.S. Navy veteran having served from 1944 to 1964 during WW II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a member of Macomb VFW Post 1921, American Legion, NRA, the Association of Naval Aviation, Association of Aviation Ordnancemen and a former Intelligence Officer. Ernie was employed for over twenty years as a custodian at the Garden Grove Unified School District (CA) until his retirement. Growing up in the Polynesian Islands, Ernie enjoyed hunting, fishing, swimming, sailing and surfing.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal; and son, Tommy Lee Heierle.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 14, 2022 at All Faiths Chapel at the Illinois Veteran’s Home. There will be no formal visitation. Burial with military honors will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 18, 2022 at Good Hope Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Teresa Adams House, 630 North 11th Street, Quincy, IL 62301.
