Enoch “Nick” Scull Jr., a decorated World War II Veteran and long-time resident of the Plano/ Sandwich area, passed away on Monday, July 19, 2021, just 3 weeks shy of his 97th birthday.

Nick was born on a farm outside Plano on August 12, 1924 to Enoch and Vera (Johns) Scull Sr. He entered the United States Army during World War II and served as a Tech Sergeant with the 1035rd Combat Engineer Battalion in the 28th Infantry Division. He fought in 4 major battles including Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, and Rhineland. Nick was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and spent 4 months in a German POW camp.

A decorated veteran, he received two Purple Hearts, American Theatre Ribbon, European/American Theatre Ribbon with 4 Bronze Battle Stars, the Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal with two Overseas Service Bars, POW Medal, and a Unit Citation for Bravery. From the French Government, he was awarded “Knight of the French Legion of Honor.” Recently on June 12th, he was presented the “Order of Merit” medal from the Ambassador of Luxembourg for his bravery during the Battle of the Bulge. Nick was one of the “Heroes of Hosingen” who helped defend the village of Hosingen, Luxembourg. Which helped delay the German Army siege of Bastogne. Governor Pritzker proclaimed June 11th the “Nick Scull Day of Recognition” in Illinois.

After his Military service, Nick played baseball for the minor league Tampa Bay Smokers. He attended barber college through the G.I. Bill and opened up Nick’s Barber Shop in Plano in 1947. He was later a foreman for Federal Huber and a partner in Plano Metal Specialties. He was a member of Cedardell Golf Club and a 74 year member of the Plano American Legion Post.

Nick was preceded in death by his parents, his four sisters; Susan Sherman (Walter), Kay Inman (Myles), Elsie Scull, and Vera Eleff (George); and a son, Paul Scull Sr.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Patricia (Henry) Scull, four children, Jeff Scull, Wendy Hartzfeld (Tom), Scott Scull (Vicki), and Steve Scull (Ellie); grandchildren, Nikki Gonzales (Marcos), Tracee Leitner (Scott), Summer Beyer (Josh), Brandi Hartzfeld, Mindy Hilliard (Tim), Kaelyn Scull, Kurt Muth (Jeanice), Chris Muth (Allysia), Paul Scull (Heather), Jeremy Scull (Diana), Joey Scull, Josh Scull (Brandy), Jon Scull (Whitney), Ashleigh Russell (Tom); 27 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Cremation has been accorded to Nick. Graveside services will be held at a later date in Little Rock Cemetery in Plano, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Plano American Legion Post. Arrangements are in the care of the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home.
