Elmer Steinkamp

Elmer H. Steinkamp age 92, of the Illinois Veteran’s Home, formerly of 1236 North 12th Street, died on Friday, September 12, 2014 in the home. Elmer was born March 2, 1922 in Fowler, IL a son of Ferdinand H. and Rosina W.C. (Gengenbacher) Steinkamp. He married Rosetta M. “Rosie” Bockhold on September 10, 1946 in St. Francis Church, she preceded him in death on June 24, 2010.

Elmer was an auto mechanic and he worked many years at Gem City Ford prior to his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in the South Pacific and the Philippines. Elmer participated in campaigns in New Guinea and Luzon and hewas awarded two bronze stars for his service.

Elmer was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, and a former member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. At St. John’s he was very active as a greeter, usher and Eucharistic Minister and was also a member of the Over-the-Hill Gang. Both Elmer and Rosie were involved in the Cursillo Movement in the Quincy area. Elmer truly enjoyed his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include: THREE CHILDREN: Dennis Steinkamp and his wife Marcia of Quincy; Donald Steinkamp and his wife Cinda of Springfield, IL and Janet Schmidt and her husband Jan of Florissant, CO.
NINE GRANDCHILDREN: Nick Steinkamp and his wife Jill, Krista Clipper and her husband Don; Andrew Steinkamp and his wife Teresa; Katie Bommarito and her husband Patrick, Ryan Steinkamp and his wife Stephanie, Leigh Holstein and her husband Patrick; Jon Steinkamp; Erin Schrier and her husband Cole and Michael Schmidt.
TEN GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Allison, Jamie, Paul, Isaac and Nathan Steinkamp, Bentley Schrier, Ethan Holstein and Logan, Caleb, and Addison Clipper. SIBLINGS: Richard Steinkamp and his wife Edna; Alvera Bockhold; James Steinkamp and his wife Margie; Florence Dietrich and her husband Tom all of Quincy. A brother-in-law Virgil Bockhold and two sisters-in-law, Betty Bockhold and Mary Ann Chezem also survive along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother Charles Steinkamp and his wife Rita; and his sister, Mildred “Millie” Bockhold.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:30 a.m. in St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church. Interment will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.     Marcia….just happened to notice this was your dad….I never knew him (or even your mom) personally but would always see him with your mom, Rosie, at Sunday Mass..They always seemed to be such caring people. Just wanted to extend my sympathy…so sorry for your loss!

    I have fond memories of visiting
    aunts and uncles in the Quincy area as a child. We are sorry to hear of the passing of another of our wonderful uncles. Our love goes out to the entire Steinkamp family.
