E. Wayne Pond
Wayne Pond, age 82, of Liberty passed away on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, of complications resulting from the Covid virus.
He was born September 19, 1939, to Elmo and Gertrude (Kline) Pond, in Blessing Hospital. He graduated from Liberty High School, where he excelled at baseball, tennis and basketball. Wayne was a faithful husband and father. He married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Dittmer, on October 3, 1958. They raised their three children in Liberty. He was born into the family grocery business, which he took over and expanded to include Bi-Right Ice Business, from which he retired in 2005.
Wayne enjoyed traveling, visiting with friends and family, and tolerated yardwork during his retirement years. During his leisure time, he was an avid bicycle rider, he loved following the Chicago Cubs, and watching tennis, college basketball, and Liberty High School athletics. He treasured his lifelong friendships, meeting up with his breakfast buddies and dinner dates with friends. Wayne was a devoted caretaker for numerous pet companions whom he loved during his lifetime. Wayne was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Liberty, where he often served on the board throughout the years. He also served on the Liberty Town Board and the Camp Point Water District Board. Wayne and his wife also volunteered for the Liberty Food Pantry.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carolyn. He was the father of three children, Alan Pond of Cape Cod, MA; Cary (Libby) Pond of Cisne, IL; and Stephanie (Dennis) Klingele of CO. There are five grandchildren: Andrew (Anastasia) Pond of RI; Maggie Pond of FL; Ben (Britney) Pond of CO; Kate (George) Paine of Baltimore, MD; Ann (Zach) Matthews of Flora, IL; and three great grandchildren, Halle and Aubrey Pond, Theo Matthews. A brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Judy Dittmer, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister and brother-in-law Nancy and John Nicholson.
Funeral services will be on Monday, January 17, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. in Zion Lutheran Church, with Pastor Jeff Corson officiating. Interment will be in Quincy Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and Monday from 1:30 until the time of services at the church. Those attending services are asked to wear face mask.

I am so sorry for your loss. Wayne was such a nice man. I remember seeing him many times in years past delivering ice to the stores in Mt Sterling. I always felt close to home when I visited with him and Carey. I remember my mom sharing this story—when dad was ill he was concerned about paying for the groceries we purchased from Pond’s grocery store. Dad asked Wayne if he were ever short on cash if he could charge our groceries. Wayne was so kind and agreed to help any way he could. I don’t know if dad ever had to charge his purchases, but I know mom said it gave them such peace of mind to know they could if needed. Wayne was a good friend to my dad. Rest In Peace Wayne, well done good and faithful servant. My love, prayers and sympathy to all your family.

We bought Wayne’s beautiful’75 Pontiac Grand Ville convertible years ago and that is when I met him. He took great care of that car and what a beauty it was…….RIP Wayne
Sorry to hear of Wayne’s passing. My Mom (Kaye Swanson) and I had a nice visit with Wayne and Caroline a few years ago when I was able to take Her to visit many relatives in the area. Wayne will be missed.
