Duane A. Steeples

Duane A. Steeples, age 87, of Quincy, died on Thursday, September 19, 2013 in Blessing Hospital. He was born on September 5, 1926 in Elvaston, IL the son of Arthur & Ruby (Warren) Steeples. He married Jeannine Cullen on September 30, 1950 in Fort Madison, IA. She preceded him in death on March 16, 2006.

Mr. Steeples was a bread salesman and worked for Bueter’s Bakery, Purity and Sunbeam through the years. He was also the manager of the KOA Campgrounds for more than twenty years.

Mr. Steeples was a veteran of the Navy and the Merchant Marines during WWII serving in both the Pacific Theatre and in the Atlantic Theatre of Operations.

He was of the Methodist Faith. Duane enjoyed camping, fishing & playing cards, especially pinochle. He loved to spend time with his family. He was also a member of the VFW, the American Legion, The North Side Boat Club and the South Side Boat Club.

He is survived by:
THREE SONS: James Steeples and his wife Patricia of Quincy, Robert Steeples & his wife Deborah of Fowler, and Rick Joe Steeples of Quincy;
ONE DAUGHTER: Patricia Jones & her husband Ricky of Mendon;
FIVE GRANDCHILDREN: James Steeples and his wife Tammy, Shawn Steeples and his wife Michelle, Amanda Jo Steeples, Sharon Verzal and her husband Jay, and Duane Jones and his wife Adriane.
ELEVEN GREAT- GRANDCHILDREN: Angela Smith, Jennifer Stickler, Adam Weichert, Jessica Weise and her husband Ed, Jeffrey Steeples, Allie Bower, Terry Sheets, Jr., Jesse Sheets, Stephanie Davis, Isabelle Jones and Kinsley Jones.
Six GREAT-GREAT GRANDCHILDREN
ONE BROTHER: Ronald Steeples
ONE SISTER: Deanna Iverson
SISTERS-IN-LAW: Jean Steeples & Jayne Galle
Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

In addition to his wife, Duane was preceded in death by his parents, one brother: Gail Ray Steeples, and four sisters: Wilma Cummings, Vivian Stansbury, Cora Luder and Donna Leah Steeples in childhood.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at 10:00 AM in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery with military rites conducted at the cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of the services. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the Illinois Veterans Home Activities Fund or to the National Down Syndrome Society.

    Duane was such a nice man. My grandmother lived in Valley View and I used to take him our lot rent every month when I was little! Our deepest sympathy goes out to your family during this time.
