Donald W. Goerlich
Donald W. Goerlich, age 86, of Quincy, died on Friday, January 18, 2019 in the Illinois Veterans Home. Don was born November 3, 1932 in Quincy, a son of Robert J. and Hilda M. (Willer) Goerlich. He married Rosie Wand on May 10, 1952 in St. Anthony Catholic Church, and she preceded him in death November 1, 2008.
Don was a homebuilder and partner in Goerlich Bros. Construction along with his brother Gene. They built the convent at St. Anthony’s in 1967 and St. Anthony’s Grade School in 1968. Don later went to work with his sons William and Jeff at Goerlich Roofing, Inc. until his retirement. He was a graduate of St. Francis Grade School.
He served his country in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War.
Don was an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. He was a member of the Holy Name Society at the church and he also served as a lector and Eucharistic minister.; and was a member of the Knights of Columbus attaining the Third and Fourth Degrees. Don had served as president of the Lester Hammond branch of the Korean War Veteran Association; he participated in the Korean War Veteran’s Color Guard.
Don was a member and Past-President of the Quincy Homebuilder’s Assoc. and a member of the Quincy Full Gospel Businessmen’s Association. As a member of the QND board, he served as vice-president in 1977.
He and Rosie were very active with Quincy Cursillo beginning with Cursillo #1. Don had coached the Melrose Victory 4-H Boys Softball team, winning the state championship with the boys in 1964.
Don loved to attend Q.N.D Football games with his brother Ken, and he loved to fish and spend time with his grandchildren. Survivors include:

A Sister, Carlene (Tom) Shade of Quincy and a brother, Gene (Rita) Goerlich of Quincy; Sisters-in-law Claire Goerlich; Lois Wand; Frankie Wand and Jenean Wand; a brother-in-law, Donald (Bertie) Wand.
FIFTEEN GRANDCHILDREN: Sara (Greg) Anderson of Chenoa, IL; Lori (Trey) McCarter Goerlich of St. Louis, MO; Jason (Jinam) Goerlich of Madison, AL; Aaron Goerlich,; Matthew (Joni) Goerlich; Jennifer Goerlich all of Tucson AZ; Jacob Zimmerman and Lucas (Natalie) Zimmerman both of Quincy; Ashlea Goerlich of Quincy; Devhan (Josh) VanMeter of Rochester, IL; Brandon (Jennifer) Goerlich of Versailles, IL; Jenna Goerlich and her fiancée Nathan Haverfield of Patterson, IL; Natalie Goerlich, David Goerlich and Amanda Goerlich all of Quincy.
17 GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Jaxon Anderson of Chenoa, IL; Noah and Anna Goerlich of Madison, AL; Rosie Goerlich of Tucson, AZ; Peter Ugstad of Tuscon, AZ; Jayda and Jasmyn Goerlich of Quincy; Ethan and Eli Escapa and JJ Vanmeter; Kristian and Ava Vanmeter all of Rochester; Gretta Goerlich of Versailles; Rylan Haverfield of Patterson, IL; Abel, Malia and Brynlee Zimmerman all of Quincy.
Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, brothers and sisters, Rita Bockhold; Virgil Goerlich; Joe Goerlich; Joan Goerlich; Robert “Bobby” Goerlich; Marilyn Schafer and Kenny Goerlich.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 9:45 a.m. at Duker & Haugh, funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Anthony Catholic Church, by Msgr. Michael Kuse. Interment will be in St. Anthony Cemetery with military honors.
VISITATION HOURS: Friday, 4:00-7:00 p.m. at D&H.
MEMORIALS: St. Anthony Church or to the 1947 Korean War Veterans Scholarship at Quincy Notre Dame High School.
