Donald Paul McCabe
Donald Paul McCabe, age 95, of Quincy, died on Sunday, March 6, 2022 in the Illinois Veterans Home. He was born on September 8, 1926 in Quincy, a son of Paul and Louise (Ellegsen)
McCabe. He married Juanita June Gibbs on October 25, 1947 in Quincy. She died on May 15, 1978.
Don was a graduate of Quincy High School. He was a WWII Veteran with the United States Navy serving his country in the South Pacific.
Don was employed at Gates Radio Corporation/Harris Corporation for forty-three years retiring in 1987. He went on to work at Merkel’s Hardware. After Merkel’s, he worked at Sam’s Club as a greeter.
He was proud to have participated in a Great River Honor Flight and was a member of the American Legion Post #37.
Don loved being outdoors playing baseball for many years and treasured the time spent with his family, going fishing, boating, and camping. Taking the grandsons creek walking was one of his favorite things to do.
He has three children from his first marriage: Tara (Maurice) August, Donna (Mark) Bergman and Michael (Carol) McCabe and three grandchildren, all of Quincy.
Don later married Judy Reno Hayden in May 1986 in Quincy and she survives.
Along with Judy came a wonderful family of five children: Mark (Janet) Reno, Linda (Mike) Zanger, Stacy (Steve) Achilles all of Quincy, Jason Reno of Bourbonnais, IL and Molly (Robert) Neisen of Quincy; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers-in-law Joe Gibson and Jerry Wilper.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home by Fr. Zach Edgar.
Interment in Greenmount Cemetery with military honors.
Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Illinois Veterans Home or Blessing Hospice.

I knew Don a long time ago before my 1st husband Joe died in 1999. Don and him were best friends. I met him again at Sam’s it was nice to talk to him again. Joe was best man at Don and Judy’s wedding. He will be missed. Both families have my sympathies and condolences. JoAnne Bevenour- Klingele

My deepest sympathies to the family. Don is someone I had the pleasure of working with for almost 20 years of my life at Merkels and Sam’s club. I had the greatest respect for him, his words of advice and love of life. He will be missed by so many. I’m grateful to know him. Good man.

In rememberance of my Uncle Don I am deeply saddened that he has passed away, but instead of mourning his loss, I thought I would offer a few words in celebration of the life that he lived with us all. Uncle Don came into my life when he married my favorite Aunt Judy some 36 years ago. They say that opposites attract. Well in the case of my Uncle Don and Aunt Judy there is plenty of evidence that proves that theory. To say that Aunt Judy is boisterous is a gross understatement, her energy and positive vibes is why she was always my favorite Aunt. But it doesnt stop with just Aunt Judy as she was a package deal including my favorite cousins, Mark, Linda, Stacey, Jason and Mollie and all their families. I smile as I recognize that it took a special man to fit into Aunt Judy’s “gang”. Uncle Don was the perfect fit, always at Aunt Judy’s side. He was a simple man, passive in nature, quick to laugh and so easy to like. It should also be mentioned that Uncle Don served our nation with honor, an US Navy veteran of both WWII and the Korean War. He and my father Glenn J. Gibson had that in common, as my father also served in the US Navy and fought for our country in Korea and Vietnam. My condolences go out to my Aunt Judy, who has always been both my mother’s sister and best friend and to my cousins and all their family. I truly wish that my health was better and allowed me to pay my respects in person. Please know that I will be there in spirit. May you rest in peace Uncle Don, I love you.

We often stopped to talk to Don at Sam’s just to see how the family was doing. He was a man of few words but always seemed pleased that I had asked. We miss seeing him there. Our sympathies to all the family. May your memories bring you peace and comfort in the days ahead.
