Donald Lee Weinberg

Donald L Weinberg was born December 20, 1944 in Quincy, IL and passed away on May 30, 2016 doing what he loved best, bicycling.

Donnie graduated from Quincy Senior High School in 1963. In 1967 he graduated from Quincy College and enlisted in the US Navy. During his time in the service he spent 4 years in Japan. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, Don attended Cal Western in San Diego where he graduated with a law degree. Don possessed a keen intellect and a unique personality which led to a variety of vocations and avocations: attorney, tug boat captain, commercial truck driver, IDOT snow plow driver, delivered fertilizer for Crop Production Services, and chief dishwasher at family functions. Donnie loved auctions and helped in many ways. Most significant, he was always willing to lend a hand to his family and friends. He would regularly go out of his way to provide that additional help without expecting anything in return. One of Donnie’s greatest passions in life was riding his bicycle. He regularly participated in various cycling events and fundraisers and would never back down from the challenge of riding the extra mile.

Don is survived by his sister, Virginia A Holzgrafe (Gerald) of Quincy, IL., two nieces, Heather A Holzgrafe of St. Louis and Heidi L Holzgrafe (Eric Loos) of Chicago and numerous relatives and friends who were his extended family.
Preceding him in death were his parents Max L Weinberg and Virginia Heintz Weinberg and a brother, M Alan Weinberg.

Donnie will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. He was a great story teller filled with “Don-isms” that made everyone smile, but he was also complex man who challenged those around him to reevaluate societal norms. Don always chose the “path less traveled” and lived life far beyond the normalacy of the everyday.

Services to celebrate Don’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at Duker and Haugh Funeral Home. Burial will be held immediately following the service at Quincy Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Saturday morning beginning at 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of the Trail or the Quincy Humane Society.

I meant Don and Max at my grandfathers (Saul Weinberg) service in Rushville. Don and I talked for hours, and promised to stay in touch. Unfortunately life got in the way but from reading I understand he had an eventful and interesting trip. god bless you and the Quincy Weinbergs

I am very sad to hear of Donnies passing, we met earlier this year at a Sullivan auction and I just saw some items that interested me at a coming up auction. I wondered if the nice man I met last time would be there again, was looking forward to talking with him again. To my surprise the auction is for his estate. I am happy that I had the chance to meet Donnie. Extremely sad to hear that I wont get another opportunity to see him again. Rest In Peace my friend.

Delightfully, Don was one of Peter Pan’s lost boys, and now he has returned to Never Never Land. Farewell, Don, your many kindnesses and your whimsical sense of humor will be missed. I well remember those days when you were a young lad in the Navy. The cards you sent to friends all had the return address, “Uncle Max’s School for Wayward Boys”. If you should see “Uncle Max”, give him my best wishes. Thank you for 40 some years of friendship, both on the legal trail and on the antique hunt circuit.

I had a vision – after I talked with Gingy and realized how this came to pass, I saw Donnie riding up that hill and just taking off in flight – it was as if he had wings.

Donnie was always so nice to me – his quiet kindness was like a big hug. I will try to be even more accepting of others in token to his memory. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Sorry to hear you aren’t with us anymore, Don. A loss for sure. I knew you since we were 5YO. A really nice, complex guy, who will surly be missed. Maybe we’ll take a ride again B/T L21 & L20 again, on the Sir James. I’m sure you’ll be in the driver’s seat. Rest in Peace, Friend.

Spider. Firetruck rides, gorilla statues, even more as we ride our bikes past his residence growing up in the neighborhood. Condolences to the family on a colorful and wonderful person. Thank you for being you.

    To Donnie’s family:

I fondly remember meeting Max and Virginia as a child during their visits in their blue Oldsmobile with relatives in Augusta where I grew up; and meeting Donnie years later at an auction someplace. He always asked how the “other” Weinbergs in Augusta were doing. Please accept my sincere sympathy and may God bless and comfort each of you during this time.

Donnie was one of THE most kind people I’ve ever met. He was a very humble man who wanted to help others, especially children. I never saw him in a bad mood ever. Actually, he probably had THE most balanced, well-scaled personality in this world. Donnie, you are missed tremendously. RIP

A great loss for all. Just remembering all the entertainment growing up, racing home made “go carts” down East Avenue…..You were truly one of a kind….!!! RIP….

Malinda Quentemeyer affectionately always called you “Gingy”, and I have kept the tradition for years. I am so sorry for the loss of your brother. Don has been an inspiration for me. I loved his kind mannerism and his free spirit. I was fortunate to have visited with him through the years if only for a bit, and enjoyed a visit just last week as he was pedaling by work and I got to say hello. He really enjoyed cycling, and his BMW too! I suppose that he passed doing what he loved, but
everyone who knew him will sure miss him. Hugs Gingy……Jeff
