OBITUARY ON DONALD HOLTSCHLAG

Donald J. Holtschlag, age 85, of the Sunset Home, formerly of 1206 North 11th, died on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 in the Home. He was born on January 3, 1923 in Quincy the son of William & Katherine (Puettman) Holtschlag. He married Carol Foust on May 29, 1948. She survives.

Mr. Holtschlag worked as the Merchandise Manager for W.T. Grant for 35 years. He then worked for Huck Fixtures for 15 years. Don served in the United States Army during WWII. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and had previously been a life-long member of St. John Catholic Church. Mr. Holtschlag enjoyed working in the yard and gardening. He also enjoyed doing woodwork and has built numerous toys and furniture pieces for family members. He was also a die-hard Cub fan. Don also just enjoyed being around people.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by:
TWO CHILDREN: Jona Holtschlag of Quincy and Laurie Edmondson and her husband Tom also of Quincy.
ONE GRANDSON: Jacob Edmondson of Columbia, MO
Many nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 1, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:30 in St. Francis Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites conducted at the cemetery by American Legion Post #37. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 4-6 PM with a Parish Prayer service at 5:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Quincy Humane Society.

    So sorry to read about your loss. I worked with Don at Grants back in 1965 when I was 16. I worked there thru 1969. Don was one of my favorite people to work with. He was always smiling and didn’t mind answering all the silly questions of a 16 year old. 20 years later, I married Bea Hibbards son Buddy- small world. I will always have fond memories of Don.
